Constipation remedies

Constipation remedy— The best known effect of fiber in food is the prevention, or correction, of constipation by the stimulating effect of bulk (undigested material) on the colon. Many of the carbohydrates classified under fiber absorb and hold water in the bowel, thereby adding to the volume of the stool and helping to prevent the contraction of the bowel in small segments. The latter function is important because it is believed that such contraction leads to the development of diverticuli, or small pouches, in the wall of the large intestine. [Pg.348]

Barium sulfate is used to visualize the GI tract.105 Barium sulfate should be avoided in a patient with GI obstruction. It is insoluble and nontoxic but is a soluble compound, which is toxic and may lead to death.
