Xanthines such as caffeine (1)> theophylline (aminophylline) (2), and theobromine (3) are a class of alkaloids that occur in numerous plants. The CNS stimulant activity of aqueous infusions containing these compounds has been recognized since antiquity. This has, of course, led to widespread consumption of such well-known beverages as coffee (Coffea arabica), tea (Thea sinesis), mate, and cola beverages (in part Cola acuminata). The annual consumption of caffeine in the United States alone has been estimated to be in excess of a billion kilos. The pure compounds have found some use in the clinic as CNS stimulants. In addition, caffeine is widely used in conjunction with aspirin in various headache remedies. 

Nontreatment remedies that address oxygenates include excavation, free product recovery, MNA, and ICs. Nontreatment remedies may be appropriate for use either alone or in conjunction with one or more of the other remedies discussed in this chapter. 

In addition, cover systems are also used in the remediation of hazardous waste sites. For example, cover systems may be applied to source areas contaminated at or near the ground surface or at abandoned dumps. In such cases, the cover system may be used alone or in conjunction with other technologies to contain the waste (e.g., slurry walls and groundwater pump and treat systems). 

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are a range of water treatments which involve the in situ formation of radicals, particularly hydroxyl radicals, in sufficient quantity to affect chemical or biological contaminants. These include ultrasonic and ultraviolet irradiation but they are sometimes ineffective for the remediation of water which contains a mixture of organic and inorganic compounds. Chemical oxidants can be used to add additional oxidising power to such processes and ozone in conjunction with ultrasound is one such option [31]. 

Biobarriers work by containing contaminants and therefore must be used in conjunction with a remediation technology for contaminant treatment. 

The BioGenesis soil remediation and cleaning products can be used for general-purpose and emulsion-degreasing applications in oil refining, utility, automotive, manufacturing, and transportation industries. They can be used in situ or in conjunction with mechanical cleanup systems. 

In situ oil skimmers are commercially available for the recovery of free product [i.e., light non-aqueous-phase liquids (LNAPLs) such as oil, grease, or other hydrocarbons] floating on the water table. Oil skimmers can be used alone or in conjunction with other remediation technologies, such as (in situ) soil vapor extraction, bioventing, or bioremediation, or (ex sim) membrane filters, coalescers, or chemical processes. The technology is implemented in sim by lowering the skimmers into wells located in the zone of contamination. 

Can be used in conjunction with other remediation technologies. 

DVE does not destroy contaminants it must be used in conjunction with another remediation technology. DVE cannot remove heavy chlorinated compounds or hydrocarbons heavier than the middiesel range. DVE cannot recover pesticides or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Generally, the deeper the contaminant, the more complex extraction becomes. Problems with iron fouling have been reported at DVE sites. 

This increases the number of advective airflow paths and the volume of soil in contact with advective airflow. According to the vendor, the PSF technology used in conjunction with Terra Vac s Dual Vapor Extraction has successfully remediated benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, (BTEX), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), dichloroethylene (DCE), trichloroethane (TCA), dichlorobenzene, trichloropropane, and gasoline. 

Thermal blankets have been used in full-scale site remediation, and the technology is commercially available. Thermal blankets are often used in conjunction with a related technology called thermal wells for in situ thermal desorption. The thermal well technology is also discussed in the RIMS 2000 library/database. 

The Thermatrix, Inc., PADRE process is a commercial, off-gas treatment technology that purifies airstreams contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The PADRE vapor treatment process traps VOCs using filter beds that contain a proprietary resin. This regenerative adsorption method involves an on-line treatment bed for infiuent air, while another bed undergoes a desorption cycle. PADRE often works in conjunction with soil vapor extraction or air stripping systems. The PADRE process can be applied at site remediation projects, industrial wastewater facilities, and industrial air processing sites. 

On satisfactory completion of the computer system qualifications, with PQ conducted in conjunction with a successful process validation, a final report must be prepared by the pharmaceutical manufacturer s validation team. This is normally referred to as the validation report. The objective of the report is to give an overview of the results of the execution of the validation program for the computerized operation and to draw a conclusion as to the suitability of the computerized operation for pharmaceutical manufacturing. This may be unconditional use or there may be restrictions. In the latter case the proposed remedial ac-tion(s) must be approved and, as applicable, considered under change control. A schedule to complete any outstanding actions must be documented and progress formally reported. 

No long-term research studies on the environmental fate of silver were identified. However, environmental monitoring being conducted in conjunction with remedial investigation/feasibility studies at NPL sites where silver has been found should add useful information regarding environmental concentrations, chemical species, fate, and transport of the compounds. 

Coltsfoot leaves are used in a decoction of 1 ounce to 1 1/2 pints of water, simmered down to 1 pint, which is taken in teacupful doses. Its expectorant and demulcent action is of great help in cough remedies when in conjunction with pectorals such as Horehound. The leaves also form a useful constituent of asthma and whooping-cough medicines, and are smoked as a relief against asthma, bronchitis and catarrh. 

Lubrication of the faying surfaces with low-viscosity, high-tenacity oils and greases to exclude direct contact with air. This is an adequate but not complete remedy. Phosphate conversion coatings of steels, for example, are used in conjunction with lubricants since they are porous and provide oil reservoirs.16...
