We used a two-tailed test. Upon rereading the problem, we realize that this was pure FeO whose iron content was 77.60% so that p = 77.60 and the confidence interval does not include the known value. The classical, frequentist approach in statistics requires the concept of the sampling distribution of an estimator. In classical statistics, a data set is commonly treated as a random sample from a population. Of course, in some situations the data actually have been collected according to a probability-sampling scheme. Whether that is the case or not, processes generating the data will be snbject to stochastic-ity and variation, which is a sonrce of uncertainty in nse of the data. Therefore, sampling concepts may be invoked in order to provide a model that accounts for the random processes, and that will lead to confidence intervals or standard errors. An approach that is sometimes helpful, particularly for recent pesticide risk assessments, is to use the parameter values that result in best fit (in the sense of LS), comparing the fitted cdf to the cdf of the empirical distribution. In some cases, such as when fitting a log-normal distribution, formulae from linear regression can be used after transformations are applied to linearize the cdf. In other cases, the residual SS is minimized using numerical optimization, i.e., one uses nonlinear regression. This approach seems reasonable for point estimation. However, the statistical assumptions that would often be invoked to justify LS regression will not be met in this application. Therefore the use of any additional regression results (beyond the point estimates) is questionable. If there is a need to provide standard errors or confidence intervals for the estimates, bootstrap procedures are recommended. [Pg.43]

It is not possible at this stage to say precisely what we mean by small and large in this context, we need the concept of the confidence interval to be able to say more in this regard and we will cover this topic in the next chapter. For the moment just look upon the standard error as an informal measure of precision high values mean low precision and vice versa. Previously when we had calculated a confidence interval, for example for a difference in rates or for a difference in means, then the confidence interval was symmetric around the estimated difference in other words the estimated difference sat squarely in the middle of the interval and the endpoints were obtained by adding and subtracting the same amount (2 x standard error). When we calculate a confidence interval for the odds ratio, that interval is symmetric only on the log scale. Once we convert back to the odds ratio scale by taking anti-logs that symmetry is lost.
