Concrete pipe seals

Concrete pipe seals - Butyl sealant tapes and neoprene rubber are frequently used as concrete pipe seals. The neoprene seals have very good chemical resistance. 

Neoprene sealants are available as one or two part systems with good elastomeric properties, modulus, exterior durability and abrasion resistance, but poor color stability and extended cure times when compounded for gunning. Many of their applications, such as chemical plant use, automotive, marine, and concrete pipe seals are due to their excellent oil and chemical resistance.

Sewer boxes should be made of precast reinforced concrete pipe a minimum of 48 in (1,220 mm) in diameter. The system engineer establishes the need for sealed sewer boxes. Hot Melt, Field-Extruded Sealants. Several butyl raw material manufacturers and sealant producers have recently developed butyl tapes. These are premasticated, high viscosity thermoplastic compositions that are fed as talced ribbons into a polymeric sealant applicator (PSA). Within the PSA, the compound is heated and extruded into the joint opening to form a smooth joint that cools rapidly with excellent adhesion claimed, even to oily or otherwise poorly prepared surfaces. These hot-applied, post-formed butyl tapes have been successfully used to seal insulated glass units, automotive windshields (Fig. 4), curtain walls, concrete pipes, precast concrete structural joints, and as bedding compounds in combi-...

Openings around water pipe entries and sewer exits that pass through concrete can be easily sealed using caulks. Many builders use plastic sleeves to protect metal pipes from corrosion when they pass through concrete. In this case, an effort can be made to leave a space around the pipe that can be sealed with caulk or backer rod and caulk. The same techniques can be used for pipes passing through block walls.

Horizontal collection pipes have been proposed for landfills presently being filled, but interference with ongoing equipment operation poses a major problem. In current practice, the wells consist of perforated pipes extending vertically into the waste to a point approximately 3/4 of the total depth of the landfill. The perforations are normally thin slots. The borehole is backfilled with rock or gravel to prevent waste from blocking the slots in the pipe casing. The perforations are located in the lower portion of the well to prevent the induction of air into the landfill from above the cover soil layer. A concrete seal is typically placed above the gravel. The upper portion of the borehole is backfilled with earth. 

At the start of the drain siphon operation it was found that certain parts of the pipe were of poor quality and that its walls leaked. Leaking water washed away the foundations of the pipe, which had resulted in its deformation and the appearance of slots at sites of pipe joints. To eliminate defects the concrete of the pipe was sealed with Silor, and at pipe joints corrugated polyester tissue impregnated with UTK-M composition was pasted. This ensured air-tightness of the drain siphon despite variation of width of gaps between pipes.
