Unfortunately, it is impossible to design an experiment that will totally disprove a theory based on random phenomena. Various outcomes may occur, some of which may be unlikely but not impossible. Thus Popper s falsifiability condition does not apply. The statistical method advocated by Fisher (1956) attempts to overcome this problem by substituting unlikely for impossible but otherwise follows the principles of the scientific method. With this substitution, Fisher and others proposed conceptual structures for testing theories and scientific hypotheses under conditions of uncertainty that are analogous to the scientific method. However, these approaches, although being very useful in practice, have raised a host of conceptual issues that are the subject of ongoing debates. [Pg.314]

At the UDC (University Department for Course Development, University of Leuven) a project has been initiated to build a computercoach for authors who are university domain-experts. It intends to cover the design and development process. The coach, Construct (Conceptual Structure), consists of four modules (selection, management, development, and validation). A brief overview of these modules will be given. Next, the development module will be described in greater detail as it covers the development tasks of the author. Each of the modules consists of a number of components (Fig. 2). For a more elaborate description of the coach [32]. [Pg.137]

In putting forward the proposition that all objects have conceptual content, we are tacitly suggesting that the conceptual structure of man-made creations could (and should) be a matter of design or, at the very least, that the conceptual structure of the... [Pg.96]

Chemistry plays an important role in the fabrications of new functional materials with desired properties from conceptual point of view via tuning of microstructural properties. The synthetic approach of functional Inorganic nanomaterials with their novel properties and with their applications is a powerful driving force for the scientists in materials science. The synthesis of single source precursor was carried out based on molecular structure design concept (MSDC) for the stabilization via transformation into a solid crystalline nanostructure material with improved structural and properties. Single source precursor is a molecular entity which contains all the necessary elements of a final product in a well-defined structural formula [36-42]. It is of three types as shown below ... [Pg.42]

The assignment of resources is the last step in the configuration of the process structure alternative. The designer has to select the resource type, input the value for each attribute and select the process node where the resource will be used. At this stage, a conceptual structure of a possible FAL solution is defined, and the designer is requested to select if more alternatives need to be evaluated. [Pg.590]

CE influences the design process through the correct dimensioning of the medical equipment conceptual structures that will be in activity jointly or in sequence of use. The IPDP structure must predict the equipment s joint activities or sequences for a good performance. In this type of interface, CE takes direct action on design activities since it allows a wide view on the operation and handling of the functions of a multi-functional equipment or even different equipment working simultaneously or sequentially in the same environment [25]. [Pg.745]

Obviously the ultimate use of a sufficiently reliable methodology for safety assessment is to judge whether the safety levels offered by a facility lie within those which are judged acceptable by society and which, therefore, have been embodied in national licensing requirements. In earlier project phases, however, an assessment of the potential influence of numerous specific project choices on achievable safety is an invaluable decision aid. For this reason, iterative safety assessment is also performed to rank conceptual facility designs, to structure data-collection programmes in laboratory and field, to provide input for site-selection, to guide R D work and to optimise the selection of specific combinations of safety barriers in the repository. [Pg.240]

Conceptual Seismic Design of RC Frames The location of frames in plan, the span lengths, and often the depth of beams are normally controlled - sometimes even dictated - by architectural and functional considerations, as well as by design for gravity loads alone. However, the structural designer is normally left with considerable latitude for decisions and choices on the basis of seismic design considerations alone. [Pg.2088]

The initial stage of the structural design process consists of the so-called conceptual design, in which the different structural elements that are needed to support the structure are selected and are geometrically defined, taking into account the architectural requirements. In parallel, aU restrictions imposed by the building s use, as well as its location and associated environmental actions have to be satisfied. [Pg.2621]
