Acids and bases are very important chemicals. They have been used for thousands of years. Vinegar is an acidic solution that is common in many food and cleaning products. It was discovered long ago—before people invented the skill of writing to record its use. Today, acids are also used to manufacture fertilizers, explosives, plastics, motor vehicles, and computer circuit boards. [Pg.369]

Different fractions of electronic scrap were tested and pyrolysed. Figures 20.3-20.6 show feed materials and their related residues. In the case of populated and nonpopulated computer circuit boards as well as in the case of television boards a non-sticky residue results. [Pg.559]

If necessary these residues can be sieved in fractions for accumulation of metals or used in total... Due to its electrical conductivity and low contact resistance, silver is a suitable component in electrical circuit boards. It is used particularly where clean, tight contacts are required, such as computer circuit boards and relays and high-fidelity audio equipment. [Pg.754]

Silver alloys are commonly employed in load-bearing situations. Dental amalgams are alloys of silver, tin, and mercury, and are widely used in tooth restoration. Amalgams can be prepared by the dentist as required and harden within 2-3 min. They may be shaped and modified by carving for up to 15 min but are then extremely hard wearing over long periods of time. Due to its electrical conductivity and low contact resistance, silver is a suitable component in electrical circuit boards. It is used particularly where clean, tight contacts are required, such as computer circuit boards and relays. [Pg.564]

Lead, though sometimes found as a pure metal in nature, is usually found as the ore galena or lead sulfide. Lead ore is crushed, heated in a blast furnace, and then extracted. Most lead produced in the United States is used for battery and battery electrodes as well as lead solder used in making connections on computer circuit boards. [Pg.162]

Ultem PEI resins are amber and amorphous, with heat-distortion temperatures similar to polyethersulfone resins. Ultem resins exhibit high modulus and ate stiff yet ductile. Light transmission is low. In spite of the high use temperature, they are processible by injection mol ding, stmctural foam mol ding, or extmsion techniques at moderate pressures between 340 and 425°C. They are inherently flame retardant and generate Httie smoke dimensional stabiUties are excellent. Large flat parts such as circuit boards or hard disks for computers can be injection-molded to maintain critical dimensions. [Pg.273]

The physical structures of microchip assemblies usually contain a number of thin films in contact, each of which plays a separate role in the performance of the device. As an example, in one structure a silicon thin film would be contacted on one face by a copper rod which conducts away die heat generated during computer operations, and on the other face by an aluminium thin film which acts as a connector to other silicon films. This aluminium film is in turn in contact with a ceramic layer containing other thin film devices, and widr copper pins which plug into the circuit board. [Pg.219]

Copper is used in building the integrated circuits, chips, and printed circuit boards for computers. When 228 J of heat are absorbed by 125 g of copper at 22.38°C, the temperature increases to 27.12°C. What is the specific heat of copper ... [Pg.220]

Flame retardants in printed circuit boards partnership. Circuit boards are commonly used in electronics in consumer and industrial products, including computers and cell phones. In order to ensure fire safety, manufacturers commonly produce circuit boards with flame-retardant chemicals. While serving an important performance function, some flame-retardant chemicals can be harmful if released into the environment. To better understand the issues and the full range of options for flame-retarding circuit boards, DfE is engaging with the electronics industry and other stakeholders in a partnership. [Pg.301]

These high-profile developments were accompanied by improvements in technology such as electronics, particularly the advent of transistors and integrated circuit boards, fiber optics, and computer interfaces. [Pg.5]

Shredded circuit boards. Circuit boards are metal boards that hold computer chips, thermostats, batteries, and other electronic components. Circuit boards can be found in computers, televisions, radios, and other electronic equipment. When this equipment is thrown away, these boards can be removed and recycled. Whole circuit boards meet the definition of scrap metal, and are therefore exempt from hazardous waste regulation when recycled. On the other hand, some recycling processes involve shredding the board. Such shredded boards do not meet the exclusion for recycled scrap metal. In order to facilitate the recycling of such materials, U.S. EPA excluded recycled shredded circuit boards from the definition of solid waste, provided that they are stored in containers sufficient to prevent release to the environment, and are free of potentially dangerous components, such as mercury switches, mercury relays, nickel-cadmium batteries, and lithium batteries. [Pg.494]

The Mass Spectrometer Module houses the vacuum system, capillary interface assembly, and ion-trap mass spectrometer in approximately half of the module. Also included are the reagent gas and calibration gas subassembly (a temperature-controlled housing that ensures consistent gas pressures). The other half contains the electronic printed circuit boards, power supplies, and instrument control computer. [Pg.69]

Lead alloy solder is critical to the transistors, relays, and other components in the printed circuit boards used in all computers and advanced electronic equipment. [Pg.387]

Flame-retarded grades are widely used for various computer connectors and circuit board components. Representative applications are edge card connectors, grid arrays and memory modules. Non-flame-retarded grades find use in automotive under-the-hood applications, typically connectors and related parts. As higher temperature soldering techniques become more common in the automotive industry, the use of high-temperature plastics such as PCT is expected to increase. It is also possible to formulate unreinforced PCT with crystallization aids and... [Pg.278]

WAP. The WAP provides the wireless data communication service. It usually consists of a housing (which is constructed from plastic or metal depending on the environment it will be used in) containing a circuit board, flash memory that holds software, one of two external ports to connect to existing wired networks, a wireless radio transmitter/receiver, and one or more antenna connections. Typically, the WAP requires a one-time user configuration to allow the device to interact with the local area network (LAN). This configuration is usually done via a Web-driven software application which is accessed via a computer. [Pg.207]

Initially, the control units were quite clumsy and offered uncountable manipulation options. It was often the case that only physicists were able to handle and use them. With the Introduction of PCs the requirements In regard to the control units became ever greater. At first, they were fitted with Interfaces for linkage to the computer. Attempts were made later to equip a PC with an additional measurement circuit board for sensor operation. Today s sensors are In fact transmitters equipped with an electrical power supply unit attached direct at the atmosphere side communication with a PC from that point Is via the standard computer ports (RS 232, RS 485). Operating convenience Is achieved by the software which runs on the PC. [Pg.95]
