Grease composition

The degree of improvement in a few years is clearly indicated by the marked reduction in the number of publications about corrosion after 1976. With the elimination of graphite and of excessive ball-milling, and the incorporation of corrosion inhibitors, it should now be possible to use molybdenum disulphide in bonded films, composites, greases or anti-seizes with confidence that no corrosion problem will arise, although commonsence precautions should always be taken ... [Pg.310]

Figure 19.7 shows a carbon nanombe composite (grease) made from the polymer DURASYN 166 oil [29,30]. The nanocomposite (grease) is black, opaque, and homogeneous. The compositions of the four nanotube greases that are used in this chapter are listed in Table 19.4. Two of the samples were made by dispersing approximately 10-12 wt% SWNTs in the oil, and the other two samples are made by dispersing approximately... [Pg.745]

Various other soft materials without the layer—lattice stmcture are used as soHd lubricants (58), eg, basic white lead or lead carbonate [598-63-0] used in thread compounds, lime [1305-78-8] as a carrier in wire drawing, talc [14807-96-6] and bentonite [1302-78-9] as fillers for grease for cable pulling, and zinc oxide [1314-13-2] in high load capacity greases. Graphite fluoride is effective as a thin-film lubricant up to 400°C and is especially useful with a suitable binder such as polyimide varnish (59). Boric acid has been shown to have promise as a self-replenishing soHd composite (60). [Pg.250]

Instmmental methods of analysis provide information about the specific composition and purity of the amines. QuaUtative information about the identity of the product (functional groups present) and quantitative analysis (amount of various components such as nitrile, amide, acid, and deterruination of unsaturation) can be obtained by infrared analysis. Gas chromatography (gc), with a Hquid phase of either Apiezon grease or Carbowax, and high performance Hquid chromatography (hplc), using siHca columns and solvent systems such as isooctane, methyl tert-huty ether, tetrahydrofuran, and methanol, are used for quantitative analysis of fatty amine mixtures. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (nmr), both proton ( H) and carbon-13 ( C), which can be used for quaHtative and quantitative analysis, is an important method used to analyze fatty amines (8,81). [Pg.223]

Lubricants. TeUurides of titanium, 2irconium, molybdenum, tungsten, and other refractory metals are heat- and vacuum-stable. This property makes them useful in soUd self-lubricating composites in the electronics, instmmentation, and aerospace fields (see Lubrication and lubricants). Organic teUurides are antioxidants in lubricating oUs and greases. [Pg.392]

Chrome-complexed fluorochemicals, as weU as fluoropolymers, are widely used products. The compositions are proprietary. Fluorochemicals provide a high degree of water repeUency as weU as repeUency to aqueous stains, oUs, grease, and oilhorne stains. TraditionaUy, treatments are appUed duting a dmm process ia which about 30 min are required for flUl penetration of the leather to occur. Products are also avaUable for appUcation with sprayiag equipment and roU coaters. [Pg.309]

Graphite lubricants include the dry powder, admixtures with liquid lubricants or greases, volatile liquids compounded with film-forming substances to produce bonded dry films, synthetic resins and powder metal compositions containing graphite for bearings, and finely divided suspensions in liquids (colloidal graphite). [Pg.577]

The composition of common fats and oils are found in Table 1. The most predominant feedstocks for the manufacture of fatty acids are tallow and grease, coconut oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, soybean oil, rapeseed oil, and cottonseed oil. Another large source of fatty acids comes from the distillation of cmde tall oil obtained as a by-product from the Kraft pulping process (see Tall oil Carboxylic acids, fatty acids from tall oil). [Pg.89]

Surfactants are probably the materials which most affect the performance of alkali cleaners. Surfactants are complex chemicals which modify the solubility of various materials in, and their surface affinity for, oil and water. The diverse composite which makes up the surface of a metal object must be fully wetted out if the cleaner is to perform properly. Surfactants lower the surface tension to allow wetting out to occur. Oils and greases must either be dissolved off the surface or lifted from it surfactants assist in both areas. [Pg.284]

The smearing types of material are usually lubricating grease compositions, i.e. blends of soaps and lubricating oil, biit may be mixtures containing petrolatum, oil, lanolin or fatty material. They are softer than the hot-dip materials to pOrmit cold application by smearing. [Pg.757]
