Blends of isobutylene polymers with thermoplastic resins are used for toughening these compounds. High density polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene are often modified with 5 to 30 wt % polyisobutylene. At higher elastomer concentration the blends of butyl-type polymers with polyolefins become more mbbery in nature, and these compositions are used as thermoplastic elastomers (98). In some cases, a halobutyl phase is cross-linked as it is dispersed in the polyolefin to produce a highly elastic compound that is processible in thermoplastic mol ding equipment (99) (see Elastomers, synthetic-thermoplastic). ... [Pg.487]

Improved compositions useful for the production of foamed rotomoulded articles are provided. The compositions of the invention are comprised of a first thermoplastic resin component which is an ethylene polymer in pellet form containing a foaming agent and a second thermoplastic resin component which is a powder consisting of a mixture of different particle size and melt index ethylene polymers. An improved process for producing foamed rotomoulded articles having uniformly foamed interiors and smooth exterior skins which are snbstantially free of surface defects is also provided. [Pg.67]

Both thermoset and thermoplastic resin systems are employed in the construction of composites (Table 8.3). The most common thermoset resins are polyimides, unsaturated polyesters, epoxys, PFs, and amino-formaldehydes. A wide variety of thermoplastic resins have been developed. [Pg.244]

The function of the resin matrix material in filament-wound structures is to help distribute the load, maintain proper fiber position, control composite mechanical and chemical properties, and provide interlaminar shear strength. Either a thermosetting or a thermoplastic resin material may be selected. Thermosetting resins may be selected for application in a wetwinding process or as part of a prepreg resin system. [Pg.394]

Dual-cure resins for wood composites. These resins (heat and EB irradiation systems) are based on urethane-acrylate thermoplastic adhesive demonstrate efficacy to bond wood. Eow amounfs of EB radiation were needed to produce a wood bond that survived shipping and that improved the composite modulus. The system demonstrated promise and a new direction for wood adhesives. [Pg.246]

Polyetheresteramide antistatic agents consisting of the reaction product of unde-canoic acid, hexamethylenediamine, dodecanedioic, and ethylene glycol were prepared by Linemann et al. (5) and blended with thermoplastic resins to form breathable polymer compositions. [Pg.20]

Electroconductive resin compositions, which are useful for packaging electronic devices, have been described. In general, electroconductive resin compositions are made up from a thermoplastic resin and an electroconductive filler, mostly carbon black. Polyphenylene ether) resins are known to impart heat resistance. For general purposes, a poly(styrene) (PS) resin and an ABS resin are superior to other resins in that even if carbon black is incorporated in a large amount, there will be no substantial decrease in the flowability or... [Pg.236]

The high impact strength thermoplastic resin exhibits different characteristics. According to the rubber used in the composition, the properties of the final product can be tailored to some extent. [Pg.334]

Such thermoplastic resin compositions have excellent basic physical properties, weatherability and good appearance properties, such as scratch resistance, color stability and gloss. [Pg.336]

Fabrication. Processes for fabricating solid fuel pellets from a variety of feedstocks, particulady RDF, wood, and wood and agricultural residues, have been developed. The pellets are manufactured by extrusion and other techniques and, in some cases, a binding agent such as a thermoplastic resin is incorporated during fabrication. The fabricated products are reported to be more uniform in combustion characteristics than the raw biomass. Depending on the composition of the additives in the pelletized fuel, the heat of combustion can be higher or lower than that of the unpelletized material. [Pg.17]

Thermoplastic matrix composites are generally employed where high-volume and economic considerations exist such as in the automotive and decorative paneling industries. Thermoplastic resin-based composites range from high-priced polyimide, polyethersul-fone, and polyetheretherketone to the more affordable nylon, acetal, and polycarbonate resins. Practically all thermoplastics are available in glass-reinforced grades. [Pg.379]

Reinforced thermoplastic parts are generally abraded and cleaned prior to adhesive bonding. However, special surface treatment such as used on the thermoplastic resin matrix may be necessary for optimum strength. Care must be taken so that the treatment chemicals do not wick into the composite material and cause degradation. It may not be a good idea to use chemical surface treatment without first verifying that the treatment does not degrade the substrate. [Pg.380]

When wood meals are kneaded with synthetic thermoplastic resins, the mixture shows hot-melting behavior as these plastics act as external plasticizers [20]. However, such wood plastic composites lack a fibrous construction and do not show the excellent properties of solid wood such as beautiful grain and color, tactility, or insulation. [Pg.206]

Thermoplastic resin compositions consisting of ethylene, propylene, 5-ethylidene-2-norborene, and trimethylsilyl 4-methyl-tetracyclo[6.2.1.1 . 0 ]-dodec-9-ene -carboxylate were prepared and hydrolyzed into the corresponding carboxylic acid. These materials are useful as transparent resins in automotive components. [Pg.692]
