Complexity management

Meat producers often experience difficulty co-ordinating the complex management of production, processing, delivery and sales system required to target the restaurant market. Compared with wholesalers, individual restaurants do not use large quantities of meat. It would be advantageous for the farmer to be near a large metropolitan area with numerous restaurants. Access to a variety of restaurants will allow the farmer to use up more of his animal. The norm is for the farmer to establish a route and deliver once or twice a week. The farmer could also sell meat bones to chefs who appreciate the quality for soup stock. [Pg.135]

Teamwork is not a simplistic, mechanistic work organization technique that can be appUed easily with immediate results. To the contrary, it can be a complex management approach that demands well-planned support in all its phases to be effective. Teamwork is not a panacea and is not suitable to all organizational contexts. [Pg.981]

A known concept for manufacturing optimization is, for example, the cmicept of Virtual Manufacturing. Its basic idea is the simulation of the real world to create a test field for conducting experiments on the influence of production design on the systems performance. Therefore, a comparison and appropriate adoption of the real production system is needed continuously (Wiendahl and Scholtissek 1994). Figure 2 summarizes the current trends in the field of complexity management described in this section. [Pg.935]

From the business point of view (Fig. 14.1), modularization has three purposes to make complexity manageable, to enable parallel work, and to accommodate future uncertainty [7]. The impact of modularity to the financial and organizational stmcture of an industry can be described with three aspects (1) Modularity is a financial force that can change the strucmre of an industry (2) The value and costs associated with constructing and exploiting a modular design are explored (3) The ways in which modularity shapes organizations and the risks that it poses for particular enterprises are examined. [Pg.391]

Congress then directed DOE to request the National Reach Council to review the health, safety, and environmental issues at the installations that were involved in the manufacture of nuclear weapons. In all there were 17 plants that were included in the review scope. The National Research Council provided their recommendations in The Nuclear Weapons Complex Management for He th, Safety, and the Environment (1989) Commission on Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Applications (CPSMA) (National Research Council Reviews, 1989). The Commission s report addressed many generic issues that dealt with the culture associated with nuclear weapon production. Redirecting the culture to ensure that health, safety, and environmental considerations are integral to making operational decisions was one of the major recommendations. [Pg.661]

For materials that are not compatible with any of the sterilization methods available, the alternative is production in an aseptic environment. The main disadvantages of this solution are the complex management of the process and the related high costs, which usually render the final product economically not profitable. Moreover, aseptic processing provides a lower degree of safety for the patient than terminal sterilization [28]. Despite these issues, manufacturers and regulatory institutions in some cases are compelled to select this option, which underlines the lack of terminal sterilization methods compatible with all the materials used in the medical field [29]. [Pg.136]
