Communicating safety information

Meeting the FDA s key goal, to ensure the safety of prescription drugs, requires not only evaluation of risks before approval but also communicating safety information to the public. The first half of the 2001 document presented below explains how the agency works toward this goal.

Bar charts help to compare performance among organizational units. There are various types of bar charts. Stacked bar charts show the contribution of each unit to the whole for different periods or elements. Bar charts that show values in descending or ascending order help compare different groups. Figure 37-10 shows one type of bar chart for communicating safety information. 

Probabilistic risk assessment, again taken from the commercial nuclear industry, is another useful tool for the transit community. Because all transit systems and industries have to face public scrutiny, risk assessments are a very good way to communicate safety information to the public.

Contract documents should be reviewed. The HASP should reflect and possibly reference contractual agreements. Contract documents can contain much information pertinent to site safety. For example, many contracts contain monetary incentives for completion of site work accident free. If management wishes to share some of this monetary incentive with site workers, the HASP is an excellent vehicle for communicating safety incentive programs. 

Make sure your company s short-term objectives (e.g., updating aii P IDs) are consistent with broader PSM goais (e.g., accurate process safety information), sind communicate them in ways that clearly encourage work habits and procedures that support PSM performance. For exampie, your employees need to understand that the company will achieve its goal of reducing reportable incidents by changing its PSM procedures, not its reporting processes.
