Color engineering

We have chosen carotenoid biosynthesis as the example system for demonstrating the prospects of biotechnology of food colorants for several reasons. Carotenoid biosynthesis is the second most understood system. Multiple examples of valuable food colorant engineering in fungi, bacteria, and plants have been reported. Finally, carotenogenesis in cereal crops such as maize and rice is the primary focus of our research efforts. Hopefully, we provide the food technologist with a template with which to examine other industrially important pigment systems. [Pg.349]

Producers such as automakers have not seen a strong correlation between customer s words and actions. That is, there are claims that environmental performance is important in their purchasing decision, but postpurchase surveys place environmental concerns well below other factors such as a vehicle s comfort, size, color, engine performance, etc. [2]. Studies have been conducted that if environmental characteristics are the sole focus, the marketing will be relatively unsuccessful. However, if other product benefits are linked to the environmental attributes, most consumers will give such products favorable consideration [10]. [Pg.155]

Detergent Additives. Diesel engine deposits ate most troublesome in the fuel dehvery system, ie, the fuel pump and both fuel side and combustion side of the injectors. Small clearances and high pressures mean that even small amounts of deposits have the potential to cause maldistribution and poor atomization in the combustion chamber. The same types of additives used in gasoline ate used in diesel fuel. Low molecular weight amines can also provide some corrosion inhibition as well as some color stabilization. Whereas detergents have been shown to be effective in certain tests, the benefit in widespread use is not fully agreed upon (77). [Pg.193]

Metal. Metal shingles and stamped panels that imitate wood or tile are available. These are light in weight and come in many colors and styles, from pre-engineered to custom-fabricated. [Pg.216]

New product introductions are generally heavily supported by the technical service function. Many customers using chemical feedstocks to produce multicomponent products for the consumer market require extensive on-line evaluations of new raw materials prior to their acceptance for use. An example of this would be the use of a new engineering polymer for the fabrication of exterior automobile stmctural panels. Full-scale fabrication of the part foUowed by a detailed study of parameters, such as impact strength, colorant behavior, paint receptivity, exterior photodurabiHty, mar resistance, and others, would be required prior to making a raw materials change of this nature. [Pg.378]

In the instant reprographic field, Copycolor materials are used extensively in Europe but are not distributed in the United States. Principal markets are in seismological charts and maps for the oil industry, mapmaking, and reproduction of large graphs, charts, and engineering drawings. The films are also used for small color stats and for position proofs in layout work. [Pg.510]

Color/Transparency. Almost all amorphous engineering thermoplastics, except PC and some polyester carbonates, are inherently colored. Even polycarbonates have yellowness indexes (YI) (36) of 0.1 to 5.0. Colorless material is produced from these resins by compounding with complementary blue dyes which reduce transmission. Ha2e in amorphous resins is an indication of particulates. Ha2e reduces optical clarity and transmission. [Pg.264]
