The Board of Certified Safety Professionals and the American Society of Safety Engineers have issued Codes of Professional Conduct that deserve publicity and promotion. Currently applicable codes of ethics and professional conduct issued by BCSP and ASSE are Addenda A and B in this chapter. [Pg.116]

Board of Certified Safety Professionals Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct... [Pg.120]

This code sets forth the code of ethics and professional standards to be observed by holders of documents of certification conferred by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. Certificants shall, in their professional safety activities, sustain and advance the integrity, honor, and prestige of the safety profession by adherence to these standards. [Pg.120]

There are other codes of ethics and professional conduct for those involved in safety and health. The codes have similar provisions placing high importance on protecting people, property, and the environment. [Pg.4]

Professionalism. Information technology professionals need to inform themselves of the ethical principles of their field (such as the Association of Computing Machinery s code of ethical and professional conduct) and conscientiously follow this code. Increasingly, laws are being passed about how to handle information, and information technology professionals need to be aware of these laws and to follow them. [Pg.1051]

Confusingly, the lEEE-CS/ACM code is entitled Software engineering code of ethics and professional practice. It is not in any normal sense a code of practice. [Pg.22]

Staff should be encouraged to develop personal and professional codes of conduct in the organization. Just like the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) recognizes a code of ethics and professional conduct for its manbers, likewise all staff members of an organization should be inspired to develop their own personal and professional codes of safe conduct. Their code should detail ethics and professional standards in a way that is similar to the BCSP s code. [Pg.43]

When a chemical engineer notices behavior that is possibly or potentially unethical, the question is. What action should he or she take As noted in the AIChE code of ethics and in the NSPE code of ethics, there are specific avenues for action in the form of heuristics. For exanple, the AIChE code requires members to formally advise their employers or clients (and consider further disclosure, if warranted) if they perceive that a consequence of their duties will adversely affect the present or future health or safety of their colleagues or the public. The code also requires chemical engineers to offer objective criticism of the work of others. The code states that chemical engineers shall issue statements or present information only in an objective and truthful manner. It is clear that one has the responsibility to tell those who engage one s professional services when there is a problem or potential problem. It is clear that one should be truthful. What is not so clear is what a chemical engineer should do if, after such disclosure, the situation persists. [Pg.770]

The NCEES code of professional conduct (in the FE Supplied-Reference Handbook) was developed 15. as a model code to be accepted by or modified by the individual state boards of professional engineers. Compare it with the AlChE code of ethics and with the NSPE code of ethics. [Pg.787]

The number of mining health and safety professionals in the mining industry who acquire professional credentials is growing. Organizations that offer professional certifications require candidates to meet specific education and experience requirements and successfully complete one or more examinations. Some certifications caU for a coUege degree as a minimum educational requirement. Maintenance of certification usually requires adherence to a code of ethics and the accumulation of... [Pg.30]

Safety and health is viewed as a profession that has at its core responsibility the health and welfare of people. This puts the health and safety professional on a similar pedestal as a medical professional. The safety and health professionals are expected to function under a code of ethics and exhibit behavior that is compatible with that code. [Pg.346]

As the field of engineering ethics got underway, initial research involved philosophers, often with engineers as collaborators, and focused on ethical problems from the perspective of individual engineers. Ethical theory was used to provide useful conceptual clarification of the ethical dimensions of possible action. Codes of ethics and other guidance concerning human development and human rights from professional societies and national and international bodies, provided other resources, as did laws and other regulations. The field continues to draw on these resources. ... [Pg.57]

To regulate professional work ethics, construction companies and professional organizations adopt codes of ethics and compliance policies. In order to prevent inappropriate practice, construction professionals must ensure their goals are compatible with ethical considerations and that their route to meeting these goals is ethically acceptable. They must consider the consequences of their activities for others, including all the stakeholders, before they undertake them. [Pg.151]

Although there is no substitute for individual action based on a firm philosophical and ethical foundation, designers have developed guidelines for professional conduct based on the experience of many of them who have had to wrestle with troublesome ethical questions and situations previously. These guidelines can be found in the published codes of ethics for designers and engineers of a number of industry and technical societies such as the Industrial Designer societies. [Pg.36]

The aim of the Code of Practice for the Pharmaceutical Industry is to ensure that the promotion of medicines to members of the health professions and to administrative staff is carried out in a responsible, ethical and professional manner. The Code recognises and seeks to achieve a balance between the needs of patients, industry, health professionals and the general public, bearing in mind the political and social environment within which the industry operates and the statutory controls governing medicines. [Pg.730]

To better understand this mixture, we should start by understanding the notion of a professional, consider a number of engineering codes of ethics, examine the notion of a conflict of interest, and think about whisfleblowing and its consequences. [Pg.119]

The tug-of-war between professionalism and public service on the one hand and serving the interests of large-scale business interests has shaped the social history of engineering in important ways (Layton, 1990), and it is likely to continue doing so for the foreseeable future. As one examines different codes of ethics, we will see different emphases depending on whether a particular professional society is weighted toward a business or a professional model of engineering practice. [Pg.120]

An essential element of any medical program is informed patient consent prior to the performance of any test or procedure. Although informed consent is not specifically mentioned in the ACOEM components of occupational and environmental health programs, it is inherent in the ethical practice of medicine. The ACOEM Code of Ethical Conduct (adopted October 25,1993) states that physicians should relate honestly and ethically in all professional relationships. Also, the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics has issued guidance relative to patient consent, confidentiality of medical records, and communication of the results of tests and procedures (AOEC, 1987). [Pg.38]

With the Code of Ethics suggesting that pharmacists not discuss drug therapies with their patients, the profession lost sight of the need for pharmacists to communicate effectively with patients and other health care professionals. As the number of hospital and chain pharmacies expanded, resulting in pharmacists being more likely to be employees rather than business owners, the importance of practice management skills was not stressed in schools of pharmacy. Ironically, studies such as the Dichter Report commissioned by the APhA revealed that consumers regarded pharmacists more as merchants than as health care professionals (Maine and Penna, 1996). [Pg.7]
