Pigment Dispersion. AMP is used widely as a pigment dispersant for water-based paints and paper coatings. In small amounts, it efficiently disperses pigments and improves pH stabiUty, viscosity, corrosion inhibition, and odor (13). When AMP is used in conjunction with other surfactants, enhanced performance is obtained with less of these ingredients in the dispersion. [Pg.19]

Sulfonic acid salts have found widespread use in the area of corrosion inhibition. Lubrizol Corporation produces a wide variety of sulfonic acids, particularly in the form of magnesium salts, for use in lubricant formulations, anticorrosion coatings, greases, and resins (146,147). Petroleum sulfonates are used in epoxy resin elastomers to improve anticorrosion properties of coatings and sealants (qv) (148,149). [Pg.103]

Copper and silver are used extensively in the electronics industry because of their excellent electrical conductivity. These metals tend to form a protective surface coating which inhibits further corrosion. When exposed to HjS, a sulfide coating forms, increasing the resistance across contacts on electrical switches (6). [Pg.129]

The need to identify replacements for chromate-based technologies has also resulted in the development of alternatives to resin-based corrosion-inhibiting primers. These are primarily inorganic barrier coating techniques, such as sol-gel processes, which may or may not include corrosion inhibitors. These are discussed in a later section. [Pg.441]

With the exception of coupling agent technology, primers for structural adhesive bonding have received little theoretical treatment in the literature beyond a discussion of mechanisms of corrosion inhibition by primer additives and limited discussion about statistical techniques for primer formulation. Perhaps because of the much more widespread use and greater economic importance of corrosion-protective coatings, the design and function of primers for these systems have... [Pg.455]

In general, paint adhesion and salt spray corrosion inhibition of iron phosphate coatings post-treated with polyvinylphenol derivatives have been equal to or superior to that obtained with chromate based systems. This has been the case particularly with many high solids paints. [Pg.209]

In military aerospace vehicles, the service conditions are most severe for paints. One way to increase protecion of aluminum in acidic marine environments is to enhance the corrosion inhibiting ability of the inorganic coating. This paper describes the results of such an effort. A new coating which not only inhibits the attacic of chloride ions but also that of the acidic environments such cis SO2 has been developed. [Pg.212]

Coating Stability The stability of a chemical conversion coating is best described by the non-leaching character of its corrosion inhibiting constituents and the insoluble nature of the oxides of the substrate metal. Chrcmate conversion coatings suffer from the lack of these properties. Thus, a study was conducted in which all the coated panels... [Pg.215]

The mechanism of developing corrosion protective properties in an inorganic coating principally consists of forming insoluble oxides on the netal surface. Additionally, oxides must have certain corrosion inhibition (redox) properties which can protect the nnetal substrate from corrosive species like Cl and 804 . In the case of chromate conversion coating, OCC, the oxides of aluminum and chromium have been responsible for their corrosion inhibitive properties which were derived from their soluble and insoluble portions of the... [Pg.217]

There is a large potential for conducting polymers as corrosion-inhibiting coatings. For instance, the corrosion protection ability of polyaniline is pH-dependent. At lower pH polyaniline-coated steel corrodes about 100 times more slowly than noncoated steel. By comparison, at a pH of about 7 the corrosion protection time is only twice for polyaniline-coated steel. Another area of application involves creation of solid state rechargeable batteries and electrochromic cells. Polyheterocycles have been cycled thousands of times with retention of over 50% of the electrochromic activity for some materials after 10,000 cycles. IR polarizers based on polyaniline have been shown to be as good as metal wire polarizers. [Pg.589]
