Titanium dioxide used for adhesive applications should contain an inorganic coating to control polarity, improve its ease of dispersion, and improve its weather resistance. The inorganic coating (zirconium dioxide, silica, alumina) is applied in the aqueous sluny by precipitation of one or more hydrated metal oxides and by neutralization of acidic and alkaline compounds.

Unless some external shock source was employed, it was found that molten aluminum had to reach the vessel bottom before an explosion could occur. In these cases, oiganic coatings and paints (except silicones) prevented explosions. Many coatings were studied (see, in particular, Hess et al., 1980) and, when evaluated on many tests of applicability, durability, and nonexplosive characteristics, it was recommended that epoxy, coal-tar epoxy, and bituminous paints be used. Silicone, graphite, and inorganic coatings, in general, did not prevent explosions. 

Rough surfaces or those covered with inorganic coatings (aluminum hydroxide, gypsum, silicones, etc.) or rust were much more prone to explode. Ca(OH)2 coatings produced particularly violent events. Even lime coated over an organic paint led to an explosion. 

As in the water column, the question arises as to why any BSi is preserved after its burial in the sediments. Evidently some kinetic inhibition exists. Various hypotheses for the cause of this inhibition include (1) the buildup of organic or inorganic coatings on... 

In military aerospace vehicles, the service conditions are most severe for paints. One way to increase protecion of aluminum in acidic marine environments is to enhance the corrosion inhibiting ability of the inorganic coating. This paper describes the results of such an effort. A new coating which not only inhibits the attacic of chloride ions but also that of the acidic environments such cis SO2 has been developed. 

The mechanism of developing corrosion protective properties in an inorganic coating principally consists of forming insoluble oxides on the netal surface.
