The Webster definition of adhesion is simply the molecular attraction exerted between the snrfaces of bodies in contact (7). In the more technical world, it is understood that there are many complex components to adhesion in a system, both chemical and physical. Further, the wide variety of complex combinations limits the merit of general predictive mles of thumb. Instead, perhaps, it is useful to simply let a specific situation define an appropriate adhesion test, and thus the practically adherent system. A sufficiently adherent interface is one in which the appropriate applied load or sttess did not exceed the total interfacial adhesive forces. Stresses in coated systems can be either compressive or tensile when experienced normal to the surface, shearing when in a parallel orientation, or some combination of these. Much can be learned from automotive adhesion requirements, because so many durable coating applications in so many situations are found in this industry. Table 7 summarizes some of the tests used to measure adhesion. The following sections offer summaries of important aspects of adhesion in practical coating systems. [Pg.22]

It follows that if a corrosive environment is present, it seems unlikely to be physically prevented from reaching the surface of the substrate. DeLaat reported cases of serious corrosion with bonded films, although in some at least of these the films had not been properly used. On the other hand, Peterson and Finkin carried out a very thorough survey of US Naval Air Rework Facilities in 1970-71. At that time the system would certainly have still included coatings of older formulations, without improved corrosion inhibition, but they found very few definite cases of corrosion, and in several of those the use of bonded films was probably not responsible. [Pg.307]

In their experiments the authors worked with gold-coated silica spheres, with self-assembled monolayers of mixtures of undecanethiols and co-hydroxy undecane thiols, to vaiy the contact angle between 20 and 100°. The results were compared with sessile drop measurements on the same system. A systematic difference up to 20° for the receding angles) between the two sets of results was observed, but since these differences depend on the nature of the solid surface it was not possible to pinpoint the origin definitely. When the residence time becomes shorter, this approach becomes questionable for several reasons. For example, the asymptotic state may not have been reached yet, or the peaks may be unsymmetrical. These "short-time" situations may be encountered when trying to apply chromatographic concepts to the study of dispersion in connecting tubes, or in some apphcations, such as hollow-fiber liquid chromatography. Shankar and Lenhoff [77] have derived a solution in the time domain, using series expansion. This solution can be implemented by numerical computation for the determination of concentration profiles inside a tube coated with a retentive layer, when the fluid flow is laminar.
