Coated paper carriers

Other polymer carriers such as cellulose triacetate, Aclar (a fluorinated Mylar ), Teflon, and cellophane have been used for very specific applications. We have had excellent success with the silicone-coated polyester for a number of binder/solvent/plasticizer systems with a wide variety of materials. A cost-competitive and environment-friendly coated paper carrier has been evaluated and described by one of the authors in a recent publication. These paper carriers can be recycled easily and yield tapes that are equivalent to the polymer carriers. 

Stationary phases are divided into the same two groups as the techniques in this chapter paper and thin layers. The paper can be used unsupported, but the thin layers need to be coated on carriers such as glass, aluminum, or plastic. A variety of shapes can be used for the bed in addition to the conventional rectangular shape. Some are circles, wedges, cylinders, rods, and even drums. Thin layers are more flexible and more popular, so they are treated in more detail.

Other very common carriers found in industrial applications are either polymeric or coated paper. The polymer carriers range from polypropylene to polyester and well beyond. Polypropylene is less expensive and is used in many of the capacitor manufacturing operations. The surface quality of the polypropylene is often not as good as that of the polyester carriers. The most forgiving casting surface from a release standpoint is a silicone-coated polyester. This casting surface works for most combinations of binder/solvent/plasticizer.
