Coastal oil

London and Coastal Oil Wharves Limited bulk stores, in tanks, a variety of petroleum products and other substances that are flammable or toxic. Some tankage is leased to Texaco Limited which is connected into the UK oil pipeline for transfer from the site. Products also are rcccis cd by road and sea. The storage capacity is more than 3(X),(XK) tonnes with about fifty people employed. 

The use of chemical dispersant for oiled shorelines is one of the most controversial, complex, and time-critical issues facing officials responsible for making decisions about the response methods used on coastal oil spills [1810]. 

The effluent limitations for offshore and coastal oil and gas facilities are identical. The main criteria for discharge are O G concentrations. Eor produced water, the effluent hmitations are 72 mg/L of O G maximum for anyone day and 48 mg/L of O G average for 30 consecutive days. Eor other industrial wastes from these facilities, the effluent limitations are no discharge of free oil. 

Coordination of different actors. One of the interviewees gave an example of how lO can contribute to an efficient emergency handling coastal oil-spill preparedness. In such situations overview of resources and coordination of these becomes essential. There are many activities performed by different actors that have to coincide with each other. Many actors that are used to operate independent have to collaborate. As a result there is an extremely important requirement to coordinate resources. Many experts are brought in to handle the situation, which have to be coordinated without disturbing their activities. lO can contribute with tools that support this demand. 

Crude oil is processed at oil refineries, generally located around coastal areas, and then transferred to a nationwide network of oil fuel terminals, from where it is distributed to customers. Road delivery vehicles, rail tank wagons or coastal tankers - depending on the location of the customer s storage installation - can make fuel supplies to the customer. 

Where a customer has suitable berthing facilities and satisfactory arrangements can be made, deliveries can be by either river or coastal tanker. River tankers currently in use are of 1860 tons capacity but may be larger if conditions permit. The customer is responsible for supplying oil hose and/or discharge arms capable of discharging the full contents of the barge under low-water conditions. 

Acid precipitation, or acid rain, can causes significant impacts on freshwater, coastal, and forested ecosystems (e.g.. Likens et ai, 1996). Both NOi", from NO emissions, and SO from SO2 emissions contribute significantly to acid rain. The relative ratio of SO /NOf in precipitation will be substantially determined by the regional emissions of SO2/NO3. In developed countries, uncontrolled combustion of coal and high-sulfur fuel oil led to significant emissions of SO2, relative to NO Due to strict control of smokestack SO2 emissions in some regions and increasing NO emissions from automobiles, the relative contribution of NOi is expected to increase (Sirois, 1993 Mayewski et ai, 1990). 

Vanillosmopsis erythropappa Schultz-Bip. is a component of the Atlantic coastal forest in Brazil, where it is exploited as a source of an essential oil used in the pharmaceutical industry. A survey of specimens from four locations showed markedly different compositions of their essential oil fraction (Lopes et al., 1991). The compounds identified were bisabolol [160], costunolide [161], eremanthine [162], and five related compounds, six compounds based upon the cyclocostunolide skeleton [163], and the two esters 15-deoxygoyazenolide [164] and lychnopholide [165]... 

The most spectacular incidents concerning oil spills occur in coastal regions. Therefore most of this chapter is devoted to this topic. However, a section is devoted to subsurface and soil remediation jobs.

Leoni [366] observed that in the extraction preconcentration of organochlo-rine insecticides and PCB s from surface and coastal waters in the presence of other pollutants such as oil, surface active substances, etc., the results obtained with an absorption column of Tenax-Celite are equivalent to those obtained with the continuous liquid-liquid extraction technique. For non-saline waters that contain solids in suspension that absorb pesticides, it may be necessary to filter the water before extraction with Tenax and then to extract the suspended solids separately. Analyses of river and estuarine sea waters, filtered before extraction, showed the effectiveness of Tenax, and the extracts obtained for pesticide analysis prove to be much less contaminated by interfering substances than corresponding extracts obtained by the liquid-liquid technique. Leoni et al. [365] showed that for the extraction of organic micro pollutants such as pesticides and aromatic polycyclic hydrocarbons from waters, the recoveries of these substances from unpolluted waters (mineral and potable waters) when added at the level of 1 xg/l averaged 90%.
