Cloth restoration

All of our clothes were sent to a cleaners and we hired a different restoration company to come and clean everything in the house while we stayed in a hotel. I told the supervisor of this company that only nontoxic, natural products could be used in my house. She assured me that would be no problem, and that in three days I would be able to move back home. But when I walked in to inspect the house I could actually taste the chemicals they d used and my mouth and lungs burned. Someone from our insurance company found a spray bottle they d left behind in our rec room closet. That s how we found out they had used strong solvents. Eventually they came back and tried everything to make the house safe. They scrubbed with TSP and they scrubbed with vinegar. They tried everything in the world, but nothing worked. This house that had been custom built for us was now a toxic waste dump. [Pg.161]

General supportive care should be provided as outlined above. Extra precautions should be taken to ensure that rescuers and health care providers are not poisoned by exposure to contaminated clothing or skin. This is especially critical for the most potent substances such as parathion or nerve gas agents. Antidotal treatment consists of atropine and pralidoxime (see Table 58-4). Atropine is an effective competitive inhibitor at muscarinic sites but has no effect at nicotinic sites. To make any new copper sheets look like the old ones, the restorers transplanted the patina from a weathered piece of copper to the new surface. Applying acetone, an organic solvent, to the weathered surface and scraping with an abrasive cloth caused tiny flakes of patina to fall off. The airway, breathing, and circulation should be monitored and vital functions restored if necessary. All contaminated clothes should be removed. The chemical should be washed out of the eyes with clear water for at least 15 min, and off the skin with soap and water. Cotton can be causticized or half-mercerized to increase the dye uptake and economics up to 25% may be realised. Semi-mercerization or causticization is carried out in caustic soda solution between 25 and 30 Tw at a temperature of 20-25 C, sometimes without stretching the cloth to restore original dimensions. Sodium hydroxide solution above 30 Tw the rate of colour absorption decreases. Semi-mercerization is also an important step where heavy shades are required with the expensive vat colours. Better results are also observed with aniline black on goods which have received a semi-mercerization treatment. [Pg.289]

The preparation of an antimicrobial nylon 66 material by covalent bonding to biocidal cyclic N-chloramine moieties, including hydantoins, oxazolidinones, and imidazolidinones and its properties are considered. These cyclic materials were stable over at least 3 months dry storage, and after loss of activity by reaction with reducing Na thiosulphate, the activity was easily restored by exposure to free chlorine. Biocidal swatch tests showed that nylon fabrics containing N-chlorinated hydantoin functional groups produced a 7.2 log decrease in Staphylococcus aureus and a log 7.1 decrease in Escherichia coli after a contact time of only 10 minutes. The antimicrobial nylon should have many applications, e.g. in clothing, sutures, carpets, bmshes, etc. [Pg.63]

The appearance of the fabric can be restored by a dye treatment. Highly fibrillated areas of cloth can be placed in an aqueous bath at Basic Yellow 40.
