Civil states

Lorimer announces the inequality of states within the first category of civilized states. Neither citizens within a state nor states within the international community are equal. They differ in power and therefore in rights. It is difficult to imagine a more explicit carte blanche and justification for the Great Powers to organize Eastern Europe after their own wishes. This is hardly an explanation still acceptable today. [Pg.187]

Federal regulations (40 CFR 261) classify acrylonitrile as a hazardous waste and it is Hsted as Hazardous Waste Number U009. Disposal must be in accordance with federal (40 CFR 262, 263, 264), state, and local regulations only at properly permitted faciUties. It is Hsted as a toxic pollutant (40 CFR 122.21) and introduction into process streams, storm water, or waste water systems is in violation of federal law. Strict guidelines exist for clean-up and notification of leaks and spills. Federal notification regulations require that spills or leaks in excess of 100 lb (45.5 kg) be reported to the National Response Center. Substantial criminal and civil penalties can result from failure to report such discharges into the environment. [Pg.185]

By the middle of the nineteenth century it was realized, both in England and in the United States, that kerosene, or coal oil, distilled from coal, could produce a luminous combustion flame. Commercialization was rapid. By the time of the U.S. Civil War, /yr (23,000 gal/yr) of lamp oil was... [Pg.78]

Because there is no "federal law of trade secrets," protection of trade secrets is often left to the variabHity of the criminal and civil laws of the 50 states. To the extent that a trade secret is property, violation, theft, or misappropriation of the trade secret may be the subject of criminal penalty. To the extent that a trade secret is bound to rights, violation or misappropriation of the trade secret may be the subject of civil penalty. Significant effort, however, has been made in developing a uniform body of law to apply to ideas and innovations which may be the subject of this form of protection. [Pg.39]

The production of steel is of great importance in most countries because modem civilization depends heavily on steel, the raw material for many industries. As a result, most countries have an active steel industry, which at one time was heavily subsidized but as of this writing is increasingly privatized. The world trade in steel was frequently a source of hard currency where the United States was the main contributor. Trade is much more at market prices that reflect the real cost of production. Under these conditions, the United States in its own market is very often the low cost producer following massive cost reduction in the 1980s. The United States can export a few million tons per year at a profit. [Pg.400]

Instant coffee is the dried water-extract of ground, roasted coffee. Although used in Army rations as eady as the U.S. Civil War, the popularity of instant coffee as a grocery product grew only after World War II, coincident with improvements in manufacturing methods and consumer trends toward convenience. Extensive patent Hterature dates back to 1865. Instant coffee products represented 15% of the coffee consumed in the United States in 1991 (31). [Pg.388]

Copper [7440-50-8] Cu, critically important to the development of civilization, is the only common metal found naturally in the metallic state. It was thus suitable for the production of tools, and ancient people made use of its easy workabiUty and beauty. Furthermore, the ease with which the oxide can be reduced to the metal, together with the tendency of copper to alloy with other metals naturally present in the ores, promoted broad usage. [Pg.192]

Owing to the disturbed state of China in recent years, supplies of Ephedra from that quarter have diminished and for some time were replaced by a drug of Spanish origin and later, as Spain also became involved in civil war, by supplies from India, where attentidn has been given to the five indigenous species E. intermedia Schrenk and Mayer, E. gerardiana Wall, E. nebrodensis Tineo, E. pachyclada Boiss. and E. foliata Boiss., of which the first three are of commercial importance. ... [Pg.635]

Well cementing materials vary from basic Portland cement used in civil engineering construction of all types, to highly sophisticated special-purpose resin-based or latex cements. The purpose of all of these cementing materials is to provide the well driller with a fluid state slurry of cement, water and additives that can be pumped to specific locations within the well. Once the slurry has reached its intended location in the well and a setup time has elapsed, the slurry material can become a nearly impermeable, durable solid material capable of bonding to rock and steel casing. [Pg.1177]
