An official gas chromatographic method [29] is available from the determination of volatile fatty acids in sewage sludge. This method is based on gas liquid chromatographic estimation with a flame ionization detector, and is applicable up to 2000mg total volatile fatty acids per litre, while the concentrations of individual fatty acids can also be determined. Where this method is not practicable an empirical method based on the spectrophotometric determination of ferric hydroxamates can be used, giving a value for total fatty acids expressed as acetic acid. For control purposes a rapid test is described in which the volatile fatty acids are determined by electrometric titrimetry on the neutralized sludge obtained from the determination of alkalinity. [Pg.151]

Karlen et al. analyzed acetylcholine and choline by an ion pair extraction and gas phase method [134]. The gas chromatographic estimation of the isolated acetylcholine and choline was carried out after demethylation either with benzenethiolate or by controlled pyrolysis. Acetylcholine was quantitated by flame ionization detection at the nmol level. Mass fragment analysis was employed for the determination of acetylcholine in pmol amounts. [Pg.77]

In most of the work, the physicochemical behaviour of the formulations was studied by gas chromatographic estimation at intervals of the residual pheromone remaining in formulations sprayed onto filter papers. The latter were of the silicone-treated "phase-separating" type as these best simulated a leaf surface. When the formulations were exposed in a laboratory wind-tunnel there was little pheromone loss other than by release, at least for the monounsaturated acetates used in most of the preliminary work, and such analyses provided accurate information on release rates under these conditions. However, use of this technique in the field showed that loss of pheromone was very much more rapid than under comparable conditions of temperature and windspeed in the wind-tunnel (2). These results were taken to indicate that there was significant loss of pheromone by degradation under field conditions. [Pg.132]

Di-Syston was selected as the cholinesterase inhibitor for use in this study because of a suitable duration of action and because the acutely toxic but nonlethal dose has been established (2,3). Preliminary tests proved that its ethyl groups do not interfere with the gas-chromatographic estimation of acetylcholine. [Pg.89]

The chromatographic estimate of ion-pairing equilibrium constant via IPC [87,114] will be thoroughly detailed in Chapter 3 (Section 3.1.2) and will confirm that separative techniques are particularly valuable for ascertaining the nature of hydrophobic ion-pairing. [Pg.22]

A simpler desaiption of the system is desired and it can be obtained using equilibrium constants that describe aU eqnilibria in the systan obviously only a thermodynamic equilibrium constant must be made use of since, as discussed above, at variance with stoichiometric constants, they account for all the molecular level interactions in a very simple way, and notably, their chromatographic and non-chromatographic estimates can be compared to validate the retention mechanism they describe. [Pg.37]

Pitting parameters have an unambiguous physical meaning and their estimates are reliable since they compare well with literature chromatographic and non-chromatographic estimates. [Pg.45]
