C16-0042. Summarize in writing the connections between equilibrium constants and thermodynamic functions. [Pg.1195]

Table 5 lists equilibrium data for a new hypothetical gas-phase cyclisation series, for which the required thermodynamic quantities are available from either direct calorimetric measurements or statistical mechanical calculations. Compounds whose tabulated data were obtained by means of methods involving group contributions were not considered. Calculations were carried out by using S%g8 values based on a 1 M standard state. These were obtained by subtracting 6.35 e.u. from tabulated S g-values, which are based on a 1 Atm standard state. Equilibrium constants and thermodynamic parameters for these hypothetical reactions are not meaningful as such. More significant are the EM-values, and the corresponding contributions from the enthalpy and entropy terms. [Pg.21]

Selected equilibrium constants and thermodynamic quantities of the mononuclear species are listed in Table I and the distribution of mononuclear ions as a function of pH is shown in Fig. 1. Values have also been reported which show the variation of the protonation constant of HVO, - with variation of added KC1 from 0 to 2 M (15). [Pg.129]

The small difference between the successive pK values (cf. values below) of tungstic acid was previously explained in terms of an anomalously high value for the first protonation constant, assumed to be effected by an increase in the coordination number of tungsten in the first protonation step (2, 3, 55). As shown by the values of the thermodynamic parameters for the protonation of molybdate it is actually the second protonation constant which has an abnormally high value (54, 58). An equilibrium constant and thermodynamic quantities calculated for the first protonation of [WO, - pertaining to 25°C and zero ionic strength (based on measurements from 95° to 300°C), namely log K = 3.62 0.53, AH = 6 13 kJ/mol, and AS = 90 33 J, are also consistent with a normal first protonation (131) (cf. values for molydate, Table V). [Pg.160]

The equilibrium state in a chemical reaction can be considered from two distinct points of view. The first is from the standpoint of classical thermodynamics, and leads to relationships between the equilibrium constant and thermodynamic quantities such as free energy and heat of reaction, from which we can very usefully calculate equilibrium conversion. The second is a kinetic viewpoint, in which the state of chemical equilibrium is regarded as a dynamic balance between forward and reverse reactions at equilibrium the rates of the forward reactions and of the reverse reaction are just equal to each other, making the net rate of transformation zero. [Pg.20]

Data on absorption maxima of the charge-transfer electronic transitions, equilibrium constants, and thermodynamic parameters for molecular complexes of phenoxachalcogenines with various acceptors are given in Table V. [Pg.102]

In this chapter we will find that when isomers are in chemical equilibrium, it is convenient to treat isomer groups like species in order to reduce the number of terms in the fundamental equation. We will also discuss the effect of ionic strength and temperature on equilibrium constants and thermodynamic properties of species. More introductory material on the thermodynamics of chemical reactions is provided in Silbey and Alberty (2001). [Pg.36]

A series of seven substituted BIPS were treated in toluene and ethyl acetate with phenol and with 4-nitrophenol as proton donors. The changes in absorption spectra indicated the presence of H-bonded complexes with the colored form. The equilibrium constants and thermodynamic parameters for their formation were determined. The complex formation slowed the thermal fade rate significantly.126... [Pg.52]

Infrared Measurements of Association G)nstant, K. One of the most important quantitative applications of intensity measurements of Va has been the determination of equilibrium constants and thermodynamic functions for H bond formation. The results are discussed in Chapter 7, but here we shall be concerned with the validity of these constants. [Pg.96]

According to analyses of quenched samples (129) and infrared spectra (130,131), solutions of Co2(CO)8 under carbon monoxide and dihydrogen pressure give an equilibrium mixture of Co2(CO)8 and HCo(CO)4. For a critical review of the equilibrium constants and thermodynamic parameters, see Ref. (132). The kinetics of this equilibrium reaction has also been studied (129,133,134). By adding an olefin such as cyclohexene to an equilibrated mixture of Co2(CO)8 and dihydrogen under carbon monoxide and dihydrogen pressure, the HCo(CO)4 concentration drops and the Co2(CO)8 concentration rises and the catalytic formation of the aldehyde set in (130,135). If the olefin is an a-olefin such as 1-octene... [Pg.1089]

However, the number of reports on the complex composition, equilibrium constants and thermodynamics of complex formation is surpaisingly small relative to that of conventional molecular solvents.
