Processing ndProperties. Neoprene has a variety of uses, both in latex and dry mbber form. The uses of the latex for dipping and coating have already been indicated. The dry mbber can be handled in the usual equipment, ie, mbber mills and Banbury mixers, to prepare various compounds. In addition to its excellent solvent resistance, polychloroprene is also much more resistant to oxidation or ozone attack than natural mbber. It is also more resistant to chemicals and has the additional property of flame resistance from the chlorine atoms. It exhibits good resiUence at room temperature, but has poor low temperature properties (crystallization). An interesting feature is its high density (1.23) resulting from the presence of chlorine in the chain this increases the price on a volume basis. [Pg.470]

The chlorine atom has two further useful influences on the properties of the polymer. Firstly the polymer shows improved resistance to oil compared with all-hydrocarbon rubbers. The rubbers also have a measure of resistance to burning which may be further improved by use of fire retardants. These features together with a somewhat better heat resistance than the diene hydrocarbon rubbers have resulted in the extensive use of these rubbers over many years. [Pg.296]

Chloroform, CHCla, is an example of a polar molecule. It has the same bond angles as methane, CH4, and carbon tetrachloride, CCLi- Carbon, with sp3 bonding, forms four tetrahedrally oriented bonds (as in Figure 16-11). However, the cancellation of the electric dipoles of the four C—Cl bonds in CCL does not occur when one of the chlorine atoms is replaced by a hydrogen atom. Phosphazene polymers can act as biomaterials in several different ways [401, 402,407]. Mendeleev also predicted the existence of elements that had not yet been discovered. His arrangement of the then-known elements left some obvious holes in the periodic table. For instance, between zinc (combines with 2 Cl) and arsenic (combines with 5 Cl) were holes for one element that would combine with three chlorine atoms and another that would combine with four. Mendeleev assigned these holes to two new elements. He predicted that one element would have a molar mass of 68 g/mol and chemical properties like those of aluminum, while the other would have a molar mass of 72 g /mol and chemical properties similar to silicon. These elements, gallium (Z = 31, M M = 69.7 g/mol) and germanium (Z = 32, M M — 72.6 g/mol), were discovered within 15 years. As 1,2,5-thiadiazole analogues, potent HlV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitors, some simple 1,2,5-oxadiazoles, compounds 4-6 (Fig. 9), have been synthesized using the traditional Wieland procedure as key for the heterocycle formation [121]. Such as thiadiazole parent compounds, derivative with chlorine atoms on the phenyl ring, i.e., 5, showed the best anti-viral activity. Selectivity index (ratio of cytotoxic concentration to effective concentration) ranked in the order of 5 > 6 > 4. The activity of Fz derivative 6 proved the N-oxide lack of relevance in the studied bioactivity. These products have been claimed in an invention patent [122]. On the other hand, compound 7 (Fig. 9) was evaluated for its nitric oxide (NO)-releasing property (see below) as modulator of the catalytic activity of HlV-1 reverse transcriptase. It was found that NO inhibited dose-dependently the enzyme activity, which is hkely due to oxidation of Cys residues [123]. [Pg.279]

Hypochlorites, chlorites, chlorates and perchlorates all represent the same dangers, which are linked to the fact that they are strong oxidants. The danger is not directly linked to the importance of the oxidation state of chlorine atom and this is partly for kinetic reasons. The main factors of the accidents described in the technical literature are not the intrinsic properties of each anion, but rather the frequency with which they are used. So chlorates and perchlorates are more often involved in accidents than hypochlorites and especially chlorites, which are hardly used. Phthalic anhydride condenses with the aniline derivative in the presence of zinc or aluminum chlorides to yield the intermediate benzoyl-benzoic acid, which subsequently reacts with l,3-bis-V,V-dimethylaniline in acetic anhydride to yield the phthalide. The above compound gives a violet-gray image when applied to a clay developer. Clearly this synthesis is also very flexible and variations in shades of color formers have been obtained by varying the aniline components and also by using phthalic anhydrides substituted, for example, by nitro groups or chlorine atoms. Such products have excellent properties as color formers and have been used commercially. Furthermore, this synthetic route is of great importance for the preparation of heterocyclic substituted phthalides, as will be seen later. [Pg.102]

A similar approach has been described by the same authors for the synthesis of related cyclic peptidomimetics [44]. A set often nucleophiles was employed for the substitution of the chlorine atom of the cyclic triazinyl-peptide bound to the cellulose membrane. By virtue of the aforementioned rate enhancement effects for nucleophilic substitution of the solid-supported monochlorotriazines, these reactions could be rapidly carried out by microwave heating.
