Factual databases may provide the electronic version of printed catalogs on chemical compoimds. The catalogs of different suppliers of chemicals serve to identify chemical compounds with their appropriate synonyms, molecular formulas, molecular weight, structure diagrams, and - of course - the price. Sometimes the data are linked to other databases that contain additional information. Structure and substructure search possibihties have now been included in most of the databases of chemical suppliers. 

Theoretical calculations can also provide physicochemical data, which can be used as an input for 3D-QSAR correlation studies [134,141]. There is a current trend in the area of lead-finding in the pharmaceutical industry to use calculations to set up computer search profiles to be used in the screening of large structural databases, such as the chemical suppliers databases and the internal company databases. 

Symyx also runs the Available Chemicals Directory, launched originally by ACD Labs as a merged database of chemical supplier catalogues with structure search capability. The database provides access to over 1 million commercially available chemical compounds. The original concept has been extensively developed with the addition of other freely available software packages.

Among commercially available chemical suppliers, more than 13 million different structures are available. When screening databases of this size, the computational efficiency of the search process becomes a significant concern. If it takes one minute on average to dock a structure, a database of 11 million structures will take 21 years if done on a single computer.

The MSDSs are contributed by North American sources, many that are multi-national companies marketing chemical products worldwide. This database meets a growing international requirement for health and safety information on specific chemical products. It helps thousands of users worldwide manage their responsibilities under workplace, environmental and other right-to-know legislation. The MSDS database can be searched quickly and easily for product names and other product identifications, manufacturer or supplier names, dates of MSDSs, or any term used in the text of the MSDS itself. 

Raw materials and auxiliary products used in a process as well as materials of construction for equipment items can be the eause of scale-up effects . Pure raw and auxiliary materials must be used in laboratory studies to eliminate the influence of impurities on the ehoice of the process route, catalyst selection, and search for satisfactory process conditions. However, pure chemicals are usually too expensive to use for manufacture on a commercial scale. It is common practice to use raw materials of technical grade in a full-scale plant. These materials contain impurities, which can act as catalysts or inhibitors. They can react with reactants or intermediates, thereby decreasing yields and selectivities of desired produets. Therefore, raw materials of technical grade, even from different suppliers must first be tested on laboratory scale.

In the search for unique properties, chemists have isolated pertinent compounds, for which they have revealed the structures and in many cases developed syntheses. For many, in general, simpler compounds, industrially feasible preparations have also been worked out. However, for most of the more complex structures, nature proves to be much more efficient and cheaper, especially in the field of chiral compounds. Therefore, nature is still the supplier of many natural products, which are useful as such or as starting materials for other chemicals and auxiliaries in new chemical reactions. 

A convenient source of information about the commercial availability of some 200,000 chemicals is M. Desing (ed.), Chem Sources—USA, published annually by Chemical Sources International, Clemson, SC 29633 in book format and as a CD-ROM. There is also a Chem Sources—Online search engine see www.chemsources.com. Many suppliers of chemicals maintain online catalogues that can be accessed on the Web. 

Suppliers should also periodically review the information on which the label and safety data sheet for a substance or mixture is based, even if no new and significant information has been provided to them in respect of that substance or mixture. This will require e.g. a search of chemical hazard databases for new information. The competent authority may choose to specify a time (typically 3-5 years) from the date of original preparation, within which suppliers should review the labels and SDS information. 

Many individuals who wish to coin and search their own trade-marks use the following method. Recourse can be first made to a book such as Trade Marks (67) which gives an extensive list of chemical trade-marks, their compositions, uses, and suppliers, the entire U. S. and British trade-mark laws, methods of coining new trade-marks, and trade-marks classified by industries. Another excellent guide to the selection of new trade-marks is Trade Mark Management, published by the U.S. Trade-Mark Association, New York, N. Y.

Links are provided to the supplier s web site and to MSDS. Only the basic properties are directly provided density, m.p., b.p., and flash point. However, links to the full text of the MSDS will usually provide some additional properties. 

There is currently a very large amount of information on available chemicals on the web. This information is relevant for both laboratory-scale synthesis and for larger scale preparations, however, it is more easily searched for laboratory synthesis.
