TGF-P also regulates cell-substratum interactions by a selectively increasing expression of integrins, a major class of cell-adhesion receptors. Integrins bind fibronectin, collagens, and other ECM proteins28-29 and thus modulate the adhesion cascade, which modulates cell migration. [Pg.155]

Fig. 8. An electric field directs migration of a differentiated HL60 cell. Differentiated HL60 cells are cultured on fibronectin-coated glass slides and exposed to an electric field. The field direction is reversed after 15 min. The cell migration is directed by the field. The dotted line illustrates the trajectory of cell migration. Fig. 8. It is well documented that N-formyl peptides induce a rapid, transient rise in intracellular calcium in neutrophils. It is also well established that inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate released by the action of PLC triggers the release of Ca from intracellular stores. With the exception of the specific condition of neutrophils migrating on fibronectin and vitronectin [91], migration appears to occur in the absence of the intracellular calcium transient [196, 299, 456]. However, the studies that demonstrated this conclusion utilized indicators and buffers of cytosolic calcium that may not probe the entire calcium pool. Evidence suggests two additional mechanisms for regulating calcium that may have an impact on cell migration. [Pg.376]

Hyaluronan has also been used in the synthesis of biological scaffolds for wound-heaUng applications. These scaffolds typically have proteins such as fibronectin attached to the hyaluronan to facilitate cell migration into the... [Pg.19]
