The economic viability of the whole process is consequently determined, in addition to various market forces, by the efficiencies of these three stages and the velocities of the syntheses. Since the synthesis of poly(3HB) requires the cells both as a catalyst and as a reactor (cell factory), the overall yield is also influenced by the cellular content of the polymer. [Pg.139]

Apart from new catalytic methods, cascade conversions require new process technologies, such as in situ product recovery, reactor design, and compartmental-ization. In the long term, part of the present-day stoichiometric chemistry as well as bio- and chemocatalytic conversions in multi-step syntheses will gradually be replaced by cascade catalysis in concert, and full fermentations by cell factory design, or combinations thereof (Fig. 13.17). [Pg.290]

On the other hand, the principle of CellCube and Cell Factory is to provide a large area for cell adhesion and proliferation in relatively compact devices. The latter consists of multiple trays, providing surface areas in the range of 700-25 000 cm2, for medium volumes of 0.2-8 L (Nunc, 2006). The system called CellCube provides a surface area in the range of 8500-85 000 cm2 and is fitted with an automated control system (Corning, 2006). [Pg.231]

In order to undertake a large scale application of the obtained results, the zeolite MP was added to the electrolyte of Leclanche-type batteries, manufactured in the Yara Dry Cell Factory in Havana, Cuba [181]. The obtained batteries with the zeolite MP included in the electrolyte were tested under intermittent and continuous discharge procedures following the standard modus operandi of the Yara factory [181]. The results indicated that the batteries produced with the zeolite MP included in the electrolyte exhibited a better performance in comparison with the batteries produced following the standard technology [181]. [Pg.414]

Figure 30.12 represents a cell factory model to produce several categories of products via fermentation and biocatalysis processes. Industrial-scale manufacturing aspects such as uses, synthesis methods, and costs of some of these products are reviewed below as well as in Chapter 32. [Pg.1342]
