Osteoporosis is a common and often silent disorder associated with significant morbidity and mortality and reduced quality of life. It is associated with increased risk and rates of bone fracture and is responsible for over 1.5 million fractures in the United States annually, resulting in direct health care costs of over 17 billion.1 As the population ages, these numbers are expected to increase. It is estimated that postmenopausal Caucasian women have a 50% lifetime chance of developing an osteoporosis-related fracture.1 Common sites of fracture include the spine, hip, and wrist, although almost all sites can be affected. Only a fraction of patients with osteoporosis receive optimal treatment. [Pg.853]

Osteoporosis is the most common skeletal disorder, and approximately one in five Caucasian women in the United States has the disease. The prevalence of vertebral fracture in postmenopausal women is greater than 20%.2 Only one in three patients with osteoporosis has been diagnosed, and only one in seven will receive treatment.2... [Pg.854]

Most hip fractures occur in postmenopausal Caucasian women they also have the highest incidence of fracture when adjusted for age.4 The incidence of osteoporosis and low bone... [Pg.854]

Generally, younger patients with a better performance status tolerate chemotherapy better than elderly patients. Caucasian women tend to have a worse prognosis and response to therapy compared with other ethnic backgrounds.2,4,5... [Pg.1389]

For unknown reasons, women are three times more likely than men to have AD. The rates for African-American women may be even higher that those for Caucasian women. [Pg.288]

Osteoporosis is a widespread bone disease osteomalacia is relatively rare. The former disease occurs in old age and most commonly affects postmenopausal Caucasian women. By the age of 65, about half of all persons show signs of osteoporosis. The disease results in fractures of the vertebra, hip, and wrist that occur either spontaneously or with minimal trauma, such as getting out of bed or opening a window. Osteoporosis involves the thinning of bone, enlargement of the cavities and canals in bone, and gradual loss of bone at a rate of 5 to 10% per decade. It results from the continued action of the osteoclasts in forming cavities in bone and the failure of the osteoblasts to fill in the cavities with osteoid and mineral. [Pg.583]

African-American women have maternal serum APP and CG concentrations that are 10% to 15% higher than those found in Caucasian women. Adjustment for this difference can be accomplished in two ways. The first approach is to calcu-... [Pg.2174]

Nicolaides and Rothman [134] have shown with small sample sizes that hair from blacks contains more lipid than hair from Caucasians. Gershbein and O Neill [142] examined the distribution of fatty alcohols of human hair lipid to determine the relative amounts of fatty alcohols and sterols with regard to sex, race, and scalp condition. Samples originated from Caucasians and blacks, both full head and balding, and from Caucasian women. The data indicated essentially no differences among these parameters between the two racial groups or between the sexes. [Pg.94]

Ecological studies showed that the incidence of osteoporotic fractures in Chinese women is lower than that observed in Caucasian women in Western countries [213]. This was attributed by some authors to the dietary intake of estrogenic Isofl by the Asian populations. Among 10 epidemiological studies that examined the correlation between soy-food consumption and bone loss based essentially on BMD,... [Pg.2409]

Lagari and Levis [214] indicated that 7 showed a positive association and 3 no association. It is difficult to draw out a definitive opinion from these data since, in most cases, pre-, post-, and menopausal women were included. In addition, the number of subjects was greatly different (from 24,403 to 15). However, in the three negative studies, two involved Caucasian women from Western countries whose soy consumption is generally low. [Pg.2410]

In parallel, it was shown that 45 mg of Isofl per day affect LH secretion in premenopausal women, lengthening the menstrual cycle in American Caucasian women [259] to the duration commonly observed in Japanese women, that is, 30 days instead of 28 days in Western countries. During pregnancy, LH secretion... [Pg.2417]
