Carboxymethyl glucan

Cadexomer-H is an iodophor similar to povidone-iodine. It is a 2-hydroxymethylene crosslinked (1-4) a-D-glucan carboxymethyl ether containing iodine. The compound is used especially for its absorbent and antiseptic properties in the management of leg ulcers and pressure sores where it is applied in the form of microbeads containing 0.9% iodine. 

In describing and interpreting some of the more important properties of plant galactomannans, comparisons will be made with structurally similar polysaccharides, including the closely related glucomannans and galactoglucomannans, and those based on (1 — 4)-/3-D-xylan main-chains (for example, the arabinoxylans) and (1 — 4)-/3-D-glucan main-chains [for example, the amyloids and sodium 0-(carboxymethyl)cellulose]. 

The interaction with polysaccharides closely related structurally to galactomannans has been studied less for Xanthomonas polysaccharide than for agar. Beta-glucan is not water-soluble, and although it stimulates significant immunological response when applied as a solid, this form of delivery is not attractive from a cosmetic perspective. To improve it, the water solubility characteristics have been enhanced by carboxymethylating native P-glucan (54) (1,203-205). This modification does not appear to hamper the immune response and definitely improves the polysaccharide s personal care utility.
