Beginning with 9-fluorene carboxylic acid, high molecular weight poly(9-hydroxy methyl-9-fluorene carboxylic acid) has been prepared by the homopolymerization of 9-hydroxymethyl-9-fluorene carboxylic acid using trifluoro methanesulfonate as the catalyst.
