Acetaldehyde is used in producing acetic acid, acetic anhydride, cellulose acetate, synthetic pyridine derivatives, pentaerythritol, tereph-thalic acid, and many other raw materials. Release of acetaldehyde from poly ethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles into carbonated mineral waters has been observed (Lorusso et al. 1985) 180 ppm was detected in samples kept for 6 months at 40°C (104°F). [Pg.168]

Among the chemically-defined macromolecular stimulators of interferon production are the synthetic polymers derived from ethylene maleic anhydride or polyacrylic acid. The structural requirements appear to be a molecular weight of 17,000 or greater and a saturated aliphatic carbon chain with carboxylated groups in alternate or adjacent positions on two out of every four or five carbons. These einionic copolymers are active in vivo in mice against Friend leukemia virus and stimulate the produc tion of interferon in man. [Pg.225]

Acetic acid is a two-carbon monocarboxylic acid with many applications in food and as a building block for a wide range of industrial chemicals (Table 7.1). While much of the industrial acetic acid production is used directly for applications such as solvents, its primary use by volume is as a feedstock for the production of other chemicals such as vinyl acetate, which is used in plastics, adhesives and paints. Other products include cellulose acetate, acetic anhydride and acetate esters. The synthetic production route has been the dominant process since 1950 [31] using either hydrocarbon-derived ethylene or methanol as the feedstock. The 10% currently produced by microbial conversion is directed towards food applications. [Pg.132]
