Now one would expect that a carbon flash will happen. However this is not the case. The star expels its outer layers. When the Sun becomes an AGB star, its outer layer will engulf the terrestrial planets—the Earth would move in the atmosphere of the Sun. Because of g = GM/r, the acceleration due to gravity at the surface of a star with a mass of one solar mass and a radius of 100 R is only 1/10000 as strong as the gravity at the surface of the Sun. Such an object is quite unstable. The instability of such stars of such stars is enhanced by the strong dependence of the triple alpha process (conversion of three He into carbon) on temperature. Episodes of rapid energy release may occur and the star looses up to 30% of its initial mass. [Pg.189]

Table 3 shows results obtained from a five-component, isothermal flash calculation. In this system there are two condensable components (acetone and benzene) and three noncondensable components (hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and methane). Henry s constants for each of the noncondensables were obtained from Equations (18-22) the simplifying assumption for dilute solutions [Equation (17)] was also used for each of the noncondensables. Activity coefficients for both condensable components were calculated with the UNIQUAC equation. For that calculation, all liquid-phase composition variables are on a solute-free basis the only required binary parameters are those for the acetone-benzene system. Carbon disulphide should never be used if any alternative solvent is available, as it has a dangerously low flash-point, and its vapours form exceedingly explosive mixtures with air. Ether as a solvent for recrystallisation is much safer than carbon disulphide, but again should be avoided whenever possible, partly on account of the danger of fires, and partly because the filtered solution tends to creep up the walls of the containing vessel and there deposit solid matter by complete evaporation instead of preferential crystallisation. [Pg.15]

The chief danger and main source of error in a combustion is that of moving the Bunsen forward a little too rapidly and so causing much of the substance to burn very rapidly, so that a flash-back occurs. This usually causes an explosion wave to travel back along the tube towards the purification train, some carbon dioxide and water vapour being carried with it. If these reach the packing of the purification train they will, of course, be absorbed there and the results of the estimation will necessarily be low. [Pg.479]

The second indication is a faint smoke-like cloudiness in the zone of the tube which is being heated by the Bunsen this is readily visible as the interior of the tube is normally quite clear and bright. This is a later stage of development of the flash-back than the rise of pressure, already mentioned, and should be counteracted by moving the Bunsen immediately to the point of the combustion tube where heating was commenced. In either case the Bunsen should then be moved slowly forwards as before. A flash-back is attended by the deposition of carbon particles, carried back by the explosion wave, on the cold walls of the tube. Care should be taken that these are completely burnt off as the Bunsen is slowly moved forward again. [Pg.479]

The most dangerous solvent in the laboratory is carbon disulphide, the flash-point of which is so low that its vapour is ignited, e.g., by a gas-ring 3 4 minutes after the gas has been turned out. CarlK>n disulphide should therefore never be used in the laboratory unless an adequate substitute as a solvent cannot be found. Probably the next most dangerous liquid for general manipulation is ether, which, however, has frequently to be employed. If the precautions described on pp. 79, 163, are always followed, the manipulation of ether should however quite safe. [Pg.529]

Flash points and autoignition temperatures are given in Table 11. The vapor can travel along the ground to an ignition source. In the event of fire, foam, carbon dioxide, and dry chemical are preferred extinguishers. The lower and upper explosion limits are 1% and 7%. [Pg.424]

Catalyst recovery is a major operational problem because rhodium is a cosdy noble metal and every trace must be recovered for an economic process. Several methods have been patented (44—46). The catalyst is often reactivated by heating in the presence of an alcohol. In another technique, water is added to the homogeneous catalyst solution so that the rhodium compounds precipitate. Another way to separate rhodium involves a two-phase Hquid such as the immiscible mixture of octane or cyclohexane and aliphatic alcohols having 4—8 carbon atoms. In a typical instance, the carbonylation reactor is operated so the desired products and other low boiling materials are flash-distilled. The reacting mixture itself may be boiled, or a sidestream can be distilled, returning the heavy ends to the reactor. In either case, the heavier materials tend to accumulate. A part of these materials is separated, then concentrated to leave only the heaviest residues, and treated with the immiscible Hquid pair. The rhodium precipitates and is taken up in anhydride for recycling. [Pg.78]

Acrylonitrile is combustible and ignites readily, producing toxic combustion products such as hydrogen cyanide, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide. It forms explosive mixtures with air and must be handled in weU-ventilated areas and kept away from any source of ignition, since the vapor can spread to distant ignition sources and flash back. [Pg.185]

Sodium Bicarbonate. Many soda ash plants convert a portion of their production to sodium bicarbonate [144-55-8], NaHCO. Soda ash is typically dissolved, carbonated, and cooled to crystallize sodium bicarbonate. The mother Hquor is heated and recycled. The soHd bicarbonate is dried in flash or tray driers, screened, and separated into various particle size ranges. Bicarbonate markets include food, pharmaceuticals, catde feed, and fire extinguishers. U.S. demand was approximately 320,000 t in 1989 world demand was estimated at one million metric tons. [Pg.527]

When the recycle soot in the feedstock is too viscous to be pumped at temperatures below 93°C, the water—carbon slurry is first contacted with naphtha carbon—naphtha agglomerates are removed from the water slurry and mixed with additional naphtha. The resultant carbon—naphtha mixture is combined with the hot gasification feedstock which may be as viscous as deasphalter pitch. The feedstock carbon—naphtha mixture is heated and flashed, and then fed to a naphtha stripper where naphtha is recovered for recycle to the carbon—water separation step. The carbon remains dispersed in the hot feedstock leaving the bottom of the naphtha stripper column and is recycled to the gasification reactor. [Pg.423]

Electronic excitation from atom-transfer reactions appears to be relatively uncommon, with most such reactions producing chemiluminescence from vibrationaHy excited ground states (188—191). Examples include reactions of oxygen atoms with carbon disulfide (190), acetylene (191), or methylene (190), all of which produce emission from vibrationaHy excited carbon monoxide. When such reactions are carried out at very low pressure (13 mPa (lO " torr)), energy transfer is diminished, as with molecular beam experiments, so that the distribution of vibrational and rotational energies in the products can be discerned (189). The solvent is 28 CC-olefins recycled from the fractionation section. Effluent from the reactors includes product a-olefins, unreacted ethylene, aluminum alkyls of the same carbon number distribution as the product olefins, and polymer. The effluent is flashed to remove ethylene, filtered to remove polyethylene, and treated to reduce the aluminum alkyls in the stream. In the original plant operation, these aluminum alkyls were not removed, resulting in the formation of paraffins (- 1.4%) when the reactor effluent was treated with caustic to kill the catalyst. In the new plant, however, it is likely that these aluminum alkyls are transalkylated with ethylene by adding a catalyst such as 60 ppm of a nickel compound, eg, nickel octanoate (6). The new plant contains a caustic wash section and the product olefins still contain some paraffins ( 0.5%). After treatment with caustic, cmde olefins are sent to a water wash to remove sodium and aluminum salts. [Pg.439]

The flash point of PPS, as measured by ASTM D1929, is greater than 500°C. Combustion products of PPS include carbon, sulfur oxides, and carbonyl sulfide. Specific hazards are defined by the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (158). Based on information in 1995, PPS does not meet any of the hazard definitions of this standard. [Pg.451]

Manufacture. Aqueous sodium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, or sodium sulfite solution are treated with sulfur dioxide to produce sodium metabisulfite solution. In one operation, the mother Hquor from the previous batch is reinforced with additional sodium carbonate, which need not be totally in solution, and then is treated with sulfur dioxide (341,342). Butylenes are not toxic. The effect of long-term exposure is not known, hence, they should be handled with care. Reference 96 Hsts air and water pollution factors and biological effects. They are volatile and asphyxiants. Care should be taken to avoid spills because they are extremely flammable. Physical handling requires adequate ventilation to prevent high concentrations of butylenes in the air. Explosive limits in air are 1.6 to 9.7% of butylenes. Their flash points range from —80 to —73° C. Their autoignition is around 324 to 465°C (Table 2). Water and carbon dioxide extinguishers can be used in case of fire. [Pg.369]
