Transportation value variables are transportation costs ( for V p, e, /, /2 e /7 8, / e / in the transportation-lane specific currency as transit inventory value vTpel t and transit inventory capital costs t, V p,e,lMer,teT. 2... 

Detailed transit inventory capital costs are measured for each period in the transportation lane-specific currency. 

Monthly capital costs for transit inventories are calculated based on the transportation lane and product-specific transit inventory value in the basis currency of the end location and applying the interest rate equation. 

Inventory capital costs in the foreign currency are calculated on inventory values using the interest rate term. 

Inventory capital costs per period in the base currency are calculated summing up product-location specific inventory value and applying the interest calculation term. 

Short-term profit volatility and analysts forecasts, then, have much less impact on a company s share price than is often assumed. Capital markets have a longer-term perspective. Furthermore, in an industry like chemicals, even if we assume a continuous improvement in fundamental performance, the attempt to generate an equally continuous, volatility-free growth in profits will be virtually impossible because of structural factors like feedstock volatility, currency exposure, and seasonal effects. Chemical companies should learn to live with earnings surprises and concentrate instead on communicating a concrete long-term strategy - and of course deliver appropriately on capital market expectations, which will be correctly set on this basis. 

At first glance, the chemical sector appears unattractive for investors. It tends to have relatively low growth, high capital intensity, rather high volatility of raw material cost, currency risk in a highly internationalized market, and numerous environmental and regulatory issues. The capital cost of nuclear fission will have dropped significantly— especially compared with that of the then-dinosaur-technology coal-fired generation. (As one example, today the capital costs of Advanced Candu Reactors are in the range of 1000 per kilowatt [kW]—about the same as coal-fired plants.) But since the operating cost of a nuclear power plant will always be a small fraction of that for a coal-fired power plant, the energy currencies from nuclear plants will be lower. 

In summary, the total capital investment is the sum of several dozen cost components. The challenges in estimating the costs are to include all of the needed items and not to double count, be fully aware of local and federal regulations and legislation so that appropriate items are included and excluded, use clearly defined terms, include error estimates so that the accuracy of estimate is understood, and include the currency, location, and date.

During the Global Innovation Outlook sessions, several participants advanced a concept built around the term Reputation Capital. It describes a kind of currency for building trust in a prospective worker s personal and professional quahfications. They cited examples such as Wikipedia and eBay, both of which built successful brands based on the contributions of hundreds of thousands of non-afifihated individuals. 

The Soviet nuclear programme is necessary because of the country s economic and fossil fuel situation. Over half of the new installed capacity is likely to be nuclear, and the aim must be to release as much oil and gas for hard currency exports as can be achieved. Probably, bearing in mind the location of fossil fuel supplies, the total capital cost of nuclear plant, particularly the relatively low technology RBMK, compares favonrably with coal-fired installations. 

The Basis for Capital Costs includes specifications for process controls, plant location, currency, wage rates, units of measure, and contractor profiles. Default values are provided for all entries, most of which need not be adjusted. 

Implementation of the strategies requires selection and application of a set of industrial policies, but simple repetition of the existing policies established in industrialized countries will not be feasible for many reasons, e.g., lack of capital market, lack of savings, and noncon-vertibility of the national currency. Therefore, policies should be specific for the promotion of the optimum, specific industrial structure and would not suffice for the development of any other type of structure. 

AH cost estimates should be made with separation of national currency and foreign exchange components to allow for later economic analysis. Order of magnitude capital cost estimates for a battery-limits plant can be made provided plant capadties are set at fairly standardized levels and prices are available for plant and equipment at such capacities. A schedule for a battery-limits plant investment is prepared for a particular place, time, and capadty as shown in Table 21.1 for an ammonia plant in a US Gulf Coast location in 1994. Cost estimates can be at usted to account for changes in any of these parameters.
