Perspective on terms

Once rooted in convention, certain terms continue to flourish even though they may connote mechanisms inaccurately and may actually impede clear [Pg.130]

The term find has been used (e.g., Thorsteinson, 1960 Beck, 1%5 et ante) to describe the phenomenon of insects arriving near or on a resource. More precisely, we use find to mean to behave so as to establish and maintain proximity with something, sensed by the finder s nervous system, that was previously apart and of undetermined location. Find spans the mechanistic range from pure chance events to purposeful search. In contrast, the term locate favors the latter mechanism. [Pg.131]

Passive Displacement primarily due to being swept along by external medium Ballooning insect larvae (McManus, 1979) and mites (van de Vrie et al, 1972) Dispersing aphids (Kennedy and Fosbrooke, 1972) and leafhoppers (Nickipatrick, 1965) [Pg.131]

Active Displacement primarily due to organism s own locomotory devices t Most insects [Pg.131]

No matter what terms are used to describe the events leading to host use, each should be defined behaviorally. Thus, behaviors rather than terms are the primary focal points of Fig. 6.2. [Pg.132]
