It is the purpose of this chapter to provide a resume of theoretical concepts which are used in discussing aromatic reactivity. Extended discussion is imnecessary, for many of the concepts are the common currency of organic chemistry, and have been frequently expounded. - ... [Pg.122]

The production of steel is of great importance in most countries because modem civilization depends heavily on steel, the raw material for many industries. As a result, most countries have an active steel industry, which at one time was heavily subsidized but as of this writing is increasingly privatized. The world trade in steel was frequently a source of hard currency where the United States was the main contributor. Trade is much more at market prices that reflect the real cost of production. Under these conditions, the United States in its own market is very often the low cost producer following massive cost reduction in the 1980s. The United States can export a few million tons per year at a profit. [Pg.400]

Worldwide consumption of industrial enzymes amounted to approximately 720 million in 1990 about one-third was accounted for by the U.S. market. Estimation of worldwide consumption is difficult because official production figures are scarce. A relatively large portion of the production of starch-processing enzymes is for internal consumption. Furthermore, the currency used for the estimation also influences the result considerably. [Pg.303]

Formulation of the Objective Function The formulation of objective functions is one of the crucial steps in the application of optimization to a practical problem. You must be able to translate the desired objective into mathematical terms. In the chemical process industries, the obective function often is expressed in units of currency (e.g., U.S. dollars) because the normal industrial goal is to minimize costs or maximize profits subject to a variety of constraints. [Pg.743]

Published figures for inflation rates are based on some particular mixture of goods and sei vices that is chosen to represent the material wants of the average citizen. If a given quantity of this specific mixture cost 100 last year and now costs 120, then the mix has suffered a 20 percent rate of inflation. The purchasing power of the currency (i.e., of the 120) in respecl of these goods and sei vices has consequently fallen by a factor of ( 120 — 100)/ 120, or 16.7 percent. [Pg.832]

Living organisms, like machines, conform to the law of conservation of energy, and must pay for all their activities in the currency of catabolism. [Pg.609]

By the turn of the century the theory of chemical mediation of physiologic responses had gained some currency. There ensued in some laboratories an intense search for endogenous chemical modifiers of bodily responses. The first such agent to be isolated from mammalian tissue was the ubiquitous hormone, epinephrine—at that time known as adrenaline. This compound has played an important role in pharmacology as well as in medicinal chemistry. [Pg.62]

The result was of course Volume 2 and the birth of a series. The next volume, 3, was produced at the time we again felt the need to update our narrative a semidecenial period was settled upon since it seemed to represent the best compromise between currency and a sufficient body of material to merit treatment in a monograph. The volume at hand continues the series it covers the chemistry of those compounds which have been granted a United States Adopted Name (USAN) in the five years between 1983 and 1987. The bulk of the references thus fall in the 1980s the reader will note occasional much older references. We suppose that those represent compounds which were synthesized many years ago and set on the shelf at that time they were then revived for clinical development for one reason or another and a USAN applied for. [Pg.261]

Ill these simultaneous reactions, die energy released when the complex molecule AB is broken down is immediately used to build a molecule of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) from a molecule of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and an inorganic phosphate (P,). ATP is a high energy compound. It is called the energy currency of the body because once it is formed, it provides energy that the body can spend later to drive vital reactions in cells (Figure 1). [Pg.168]

Howard T. Odum (1971), an ecologist, is the most diligent in his attempts to reduce all-or nearly all-cultural phenomena to the currency of energy. On first examination his approach to causality is strikingly reminiscent of White. On closer examination, it seems that Odum holds a possibilistic position on causality, similar to that of Cottrell. In a section on theories of history, he comments apropos of the rise... [Pg.309]

Eor co-current flow (see Eigure 10-29B), the temperature differences will be (Tj — p), and the opposite end of the unit will be (Tg — tg). This pattern is not used often, because it is not efficient and will not give as good a transfer and counter-currenC flow. Because the temperature cannot cross internally, this limits the cooling and heating of the respective fluids. Eor certain temperature controls related to the fluids, this flow pattern proves beneficial. [Pg.55]

The direct focus of the present paper, however, is not this general issue, but rather a famous particular case from the history of science that has become embroiled in it. The episode involves Mendeleev and the prediction of the existence of hitherto unknown elements on the basis of his celebrated periodic table. According to an account that has widespread currency, Mendeleev s table was given little or no general credit by his contemporary scientists in virtue of its accommodation of the already known elements. What really told with Mendeleev s peers, according to this account, was the fact that gaps in the table were used as the basis of predictions of the existence of hitherto unrecognised elements, that turned out really to exist. So, for example, Isaac Asimov writes ... [Pg.46]
