Long-term strategy

We shall shortly discuss long-term strategies for making better use of information and avoiding information breakdowns, but there are also some shortterm quick wins that can be easily implemented and have been shown to yield a fast improvement in information use. 

In recent years, a variety of aryl boronic acids are commercially available, albeit in some cases they may be expensive for large scale purposes. During our work in the mid-1990 s boronic acid (II) was not commercially available and so two different protocols were used to prepare this acid. The first approach involved the transmetallation with n-butyl lithium of aryl bromide (I) and trapping the lithio species generated with trialkyl borate followed by an acid quench. Aryl bromide (I) is easily prepared by reaction of o-bromobenzenesulfonyl chloride with 2-propanol in the presence of pyridine as a base. The second approach was a directed metallation of isopropyl ester of benzene sulfonic acid (VII), to generate the same lithio species and reaction with trialkyl borate. Industrial companies have long-term strategies. For example, Exxon (now ExxonMobil) is the third largest chemical company in the United States. Some time ago, they made the decision to emphasize the ethylene and propylene monomers that are obtained from the petrochemical interests of ExxonMobil. Thus, ExxonMobil has a research emphasis on the commercialization of products from these monomers. The major materials made from ethylene and propylene are polymeric, either homopolymers or copolymers. Efforts include developing catalysts that allow the formation of polymeric materials from the ethylene and propylene monomers and the use of these catalysts to synthesize polymeric materials that have varying properties allowing their application in different marketplaces in society.

Short-term profit volatility and analysts forecasts, then, have much less impact on a company s share price than is often assumed. Capital markets have a longer-term perspective. Furthermore, in an industry like chemicals, even if we assume a continuous improvement in fundamental performance, the attempt to generate an equally continuous, volatility-free growth in profits will be virtually impossible because of structural factors like feedstock volatility, currency exposure, and seasonal effects. Chemical companies should learn to live with earnings surprises and concentrate instead on communicating a concrete long-term strategy - and of course deliver appropriately on capital market expectations, which will be correctly set on this basis. 

Lastly, as a long-term strategy what we would look for is respect for personal priorities. I phrase this carefully because issues of women in the workplace often get boiled down to the issue of day care. But children need day care for only short periods in their lives, while other family-related problems continue. At my age I find increased responsibilities for taking care of sick friends or elderly relatives. These personal priorities—issues in your personal life that really matter and that have to be taken care of—more often fall to women than to men. This is a lifelong problem—it is not just a problem in your childbearing years—so respect for those kinds of personal priorities in the workplace matters for our careers. 

The last two items in the above list involve considerable R D and hence present a long-term strategy for waste minimization in reactors. These items should be looked into carefully at the early stage of process design. The first three can be attempted in existing processes. 

This long-term strategy aims to help Europe become a recycling society that seeks to avoid waste and uses waste as a resource.
