Candidate systems

The Chemical Process Industry (CPI) uses various quantitative and qualitative techniques to assess the reliability and risk of process equipment, process systems, and chemical manufacturing operations. These techniques identify the interactions of equipment, systems, and persons that have potentially undesirable consequences. In the case of reliability analyses, the undesirable consequences (e.g., plant shutdown, excessive downtime, or production of off-specification product) are those incidents which reduce system profitability through loss of production and increased maintenance costs. In the case of risk analyses, the primary concerns are human injuries, environmental impacts, and system damage caused by occurrence of fires, explosions, toxic material releases, and related hazards. Quantification of risk in terms of the severity of the consequences and the likelihood of occurrence provides the manager of the system with an important decisionmaking tool. By using the results of a quantitative risk analysis, we are better able to answer such questions as, Which of several candidate systems poses the least risk Are risk reduction modifications necessary and What modifications would be most effective in reducing risk ... [Pg.1]

From Tsai s pioneering discoveries [25,27], we know that atomic size, electronegativity, and valence electron counts play substantial roles in the formation of QCs. These criteria are expressed by the Hume-Rothery rules [30,31]. However, three additional highlights are also important in the consideration of possible candidate systems, at least from the viewpoint of chemists. [Pg.24]

Areport is presented on the history ofVCM discovered in water sampled from Rural Water District 5 of Doniphan County, Kansas, technical characterisation of the elevated VCM at the above location and the conclusions reached through field studies. Methods for determining possible candidate systems for dealing with the problem, potential non-compliance and remedial procedures are presented and a spreadsheet-based computer model for predicting a monotonically rising concentration ofVCM in a closed pipe is illustrated. 19 refs. The synthesis of phenylene R type systems via the proposed route afforded two materials which had both final Tg s above the 350°F limit and initial Tg s which were at or below room temperature. The two systems which offered the most desirable properties were those based on resorcinolAg-dibromobenzene and hydroquinone/m-dibromobenzene. Of the two, the hydroquinone system offered a lower initial softening temperature while also providing a cured Tg above 200°C. For this reason the product from hydroquinone and m-dibromobenzene was chosen as the candidate system for future work. [Pg.40]

The computer systems that can directly impact the quality attributes of pharmaceutical drug products and associated production records include a wide range of applications. Typically candidate systems can include real-time process control/... [Pg.565]

We have recently been examining various inner-sphere adsorbed redox couples with the aim of deducing if such electron delocalization effects are indeed encountered. One type of candidate system is transition-metal cyano complexes. Some representative data for the Fe(CN)63>/1 "couple adsorbed at gold are presented in Figs. 2 and 3. [Pg.140]

It is clear, however, that unsymmetrical homoleptic (20-23) (Scheme 23), or heteroleptic dithiolene complexes (24-27) (Scheme 24), which have a nonzero dipole moment, seem to be better candidate systems for SHG application than... [Pg.459]

The list of possible mediators for acute CSA nephrotoxicity is extensive (see Table 1). Most of the studies assessing the mechanisms involved in acute CSA nephrotoxicity have been done through pharmacological blockade of the candidate system using experimental models. Individual blockade of a particular system resulted in improvement but not total prevention of impairment in renal hemodynamics, indicating that CSA-induced vasoconstriction is likely a complex phenomenon caused by the interaction of different mechanisms [19, 20]. [Pg.619]

In order to qualify coatings for use in nuclear power plants, suppliers must prepare test specimens of the candidate systems and submit them to test agencies having equipment that can simulate Class 1 and 2 conditions. The Oak Ridge National Laboratories in Oak Ridge, Tennessee is one agency used by most suppliers. [Pg.339]

Specify candidate systems of graded materials/structures to comply with as many as possible (if not all) of the properties in demand. [Pg.20]

At present, there is hardly a market for widespread EV use. Were it to emerge in the near future, no electrochemical plants would be ready to power electric vehicles, except for the lead-acid battery. The development of candidate systems, capable of better performance, requires a long time and extensive scientific and... [Pg.426]

There is a long roll of possible mediators for acute CsA nephrotoxicity (Table 1), with the majority of the studies being done in experimental models and using pharmacological blockade of the candidate systems. It should be stressed that so far, individual blockade of those systems resulted in improvement but not complete recovery of renal hemodynamics, strongly suggesting that CsA-induced vasoconstriction is complex and caused by the interaction of different mechanisms... [Pg.405]

With regard to the heat market, a light-water reactor (LWR) of the size of the German Biblis A reactor (1200 MW(e)) has the potential to provide 10,(XX) GJ/h low-temperature heat in the CHP mode. Since hot water and process steam cannot be transported directly over long distances, nuclear power can be economically used only in areas with large heat consumption density like chemical industrial complexes, or in long-distance heating systems [4]. With respect to the latter, some of the candidate systems are operated at lower temperatures and could be used in connection with an LWR, if the catalyst conversion processes can be properly controlled [14]. [Pg.14]

The performance of candidate systems is assessed by exposure to intense radiation equivalent to the solar spectrum in a hot, humid environment during accelerated ageing. Measurements of the UV transmission of the film are made at regular intervals in addition to critical evaluation of the optical appearance of the plate by eye. Since these products are to be used in vehicles, any blemishes in the film brought about by degradation of the adhesive are extremely undesirable. [Pg.125]

Careful analysis of phase coexistence limits and solubility boundaries in supercritical fluid mixtures with and without co-solvents is very important. To accurately predict or extrapolate behavior to commercial-scale systems, more data has to be collected on candidate systems. Although there is active research in this area, much of the work done so far is very preliminary. More detailed studies with duplication in other laboratories are needed before commercialization will be realized. [Pg.289]

The CRP participants are collaborating by exchanging existing technical information on the technology of the heat utilization systems, by developing design concepts and by performing evaluations of candidate systems for potential demonstration with the HTTR. [Pg.263]

Based on evaluations up to now on technology status, the first priority candidate systems to be connected to the HTTR are (1) steam (and/or CO2) methane reforming system and (2) gas-turbine system. For other cnadidate systems the R D shall be continued to bring them to the stage in their technology development when they will be considered feasible to be demonstrated at the HTTR. [Pg.263]

F) process temperature. However, the overall process time was shorter than for the other candidate systems. The combined advantages of good mechanical properties, ease of film fabrication, and potential thermal stability were the main reasons for its selection for further evaluation. [Pg.501]
