Cancer Ascites

The latter group (M13, M14) separated two types of KIK factor from cancerous gastric juice. The first was a mucopolysaccharide and the second a mucoprotein. Others thought it to be a mucopolypeptide. A similar factor from cancerous ascitic fluid (19) contained 50-60% hexoses, 1.5% tyrosine, and 10% protein by biuret reaction. It formed a single peak at pH range 1.5-10.0 on paper electrophoresis, and at pH 8.6 moved with the mobility of serum y-globulin.

Preliminary observation on 16 cancer patients who have been treated with the above-mentioned total alkaloid preparation indicates that symptoms are improved. Thus hepatic cancer patients have claimed disappearance of pain, improvement of appetite, and reduction of ascites patients suffering esophageal cancer claimed to have the self-feeling of relaxation of pain and disappearance of vomiting and upset stomach as well as the improvement of appetite. These preliminary results are quite encouraging, but certainly more extensive investigations are needed before the antitumor action of the Gelsemium alkaloids can be established.

The best sources of Hp preparations are sera from patients with advanced cancer and/or with severe infections without coexisting abnormal hemolysis, i.e., in subjects with high-electrophoretic a2-values. Sera of the same Hp type may be pooled and stored in the frozen state with no loss of its HbBC, Sera containing Hb visible with the naked eye should not be added to the pools. Ascitic fluid from patients with infections or cancer, but without abdominal hemorrhage, is a convenient source.

Phenanthrenebiguanides possess 384) some activity against cancer. The effect of biguanides on plasma protein surface has been investigated 294, 610) with a view to the possibility of finding anti-tumor ents. Aryl-and naphthyl-biguanides exhibit 625) a slight anti-neoplastic activity in vitro in Ehrlich ascites carcinoma.

The significance of these in vitro enzyme inhibition studies is uncertain, in view of the evidence that has been presented concerning the sensitivity of cancer cells to feedback inhibition by these nucleotides. In addition to the (antimicrobial, enzyme and endocrine related) properties mentioned above, it is interesting that many labdane type diterpenes also exhibit significant properties against cancer cells. A number of labdane type diterpenes tested exhibited remarkable antiproliferative and cytotoxic activities. Itokawa et al. [193] found that extracts from the rhizomes of Hedychium coronarium (Zingiberacae), cause growth inhibition of Chinese hamster V-79 cells and sarcoma 180 ascites in mice. Chemical analysis led to the isolation of 8 (17), 12 (E)-labdadiene-15, 16-dial along with four new coronarins (A-D). All of the compounds exhibited...

Table 16.1. Perhaps the first in vivo study to report the anticancer activity of curcumin was by Kuttan et al. in 1985. In this study the authors demonstrated, using an ascites mice model of Dalton s lymphoma, that both curcumin and turmeric extract could reduce the development of animal tumors [Kuttan et al., 1985]. Several reports have been published supporting the efficacy of curcumin treatment against cancer.
