Bum boxes

Diffusion systems are operated at near atmospheric or, in the hyper case, above atmospheric pressure. Precisely engineered dopant gradients at critical temperatures drive dopants into the lattice structure. Dopants are provided in much higher quantities in reactive atmospheres. Exhaust ventilation is required on both ends of the system to minimize exposures to the operators. The reactive and toxic constituents of the process gas streams must be removed before they can be safely vented away from the process. This usually involves the use of bum boxes and scmbbers to remove the toxic components and oxidatively consume any reactive species such as hydrogen or metal hydrides. 

If the CO is not completely combusted to CO2 in the regenerator, a CO boiler is used to complete the combustion. The resulting heat of combustion and the sensible heat of the flue gas along with any heat from auxiUary fired fuel are recovered in the form of high pressure steam. Accidental contamination of lithium strip with anhydrous chromium trichloride or zirconium tetrachloride caused it to ignite and bum vigorously in the nitrogen atmosphere of a glove box. 

Both the UV tests can be done in a UV light box, in a matter of seconds. Since most compounds are unchanged by exposure to UV, the test is considered nondestructive. Not everything will show up, but the procedure is good enough for most compounds. When using the lightbox, always turn it off when you leave it. If you don t, not only does the UV filter bum out, but your instructor becomes displeased. 

In the horizontal-tube box heater with side-mounted convection tube bank, the radiant-section tubes run horizontally along the walls and the flat roof of the box-shaped heater, but the convection section is placed in a box of its own beside the radiant section. Firing is horizontal from the end walls. The design of this heater results in a relatively expensive unit justified mainly by its ability to bum low-grade high-ash fuel oil. Duties are 53 to 210 GJ/h (50 to 200 10 Btu/h). 

It was soon closed in, and an attempt was made to bum it, as natural gas is usually burned, for generating steam for drilling purposes. Much to the surprise of parties interested, it would not bum. Later it was found that when a fire was already kindled in a fire box or an engine and the gas turned on,. .. it would begin to bum and would develop sufficient heat to generate steam moderately well. But as soon as the coal or other fuel in the firebox was consumed, the gas would no longer bum. 

The presence of oxygen can be detected by exposing the filament of a broken light bulb to the inert atmosphere. Under ideal conditions the filament should not bum out for several weeks. Unfortunately, the oxygen transients that sometimes result upon introducing materials into the box can exceed 15 ppm. Although the quality of the atmosphere is rapidly reestablished within a few minutes, the filament may have already burned out.

Also packaged SPC only bum and do not detonate when they are on fire. Safely packaged SPC are separated by buffering materials between the SPC boxes so that fire will not propagate from one to the other once initiated. As these examples illustrate, there are many ways to make explosives safer by segregating small portions by effective packaging. 

A gas black apparatus consists of a burner pipe approximately 5 m long, which carries 30-50 diffusion burners. The flames bum in contact with a water-cooled dmm, where about half of the formed carbon black is deposited. This black is scraped off and transported by a screw to a pneumatic conveying system. The needed apparatus and chemicals are placed in the dry box, and the box is closed and thoroughly flushed with dry oxygen-free nitrogen. When in use, it is kept under a small nitrogen pressure so that air will not diffuse into the box. A dish containing phosphorus pentoxide is often placed inside the dry box to ensure that moisture is removed, and if it is particularly important to remove all traces of water and oxygen, a dish containing the liquid sodium-potassium alloy may be placed inside the box. This alloy must, however, be handled with considerable care, for it will bum in air and will react explosively with water. 

During the winter of 1991, bulk mustard was drained from preheated (20°C) 1 ton containers into heavy-walled, polyethylene-lined cardboard boxes and allowed to freeze under cool conditions (<0°C). The boxes containing frozen mustard were then placed in sealed metal cargo containers and immediately transported to the incinerator site. The boxes were then off-loaded and processed via the rotary kiln solids feed system. All bulk mustard (3 tonnes) was destroyed in this manner as part of the incinerator test bum program (see below). 

Aged and thickened mustard (9 tonnes) contained in nonexplosive ordnance items was destroyed following approval of the test bum results. Ordnance was punctured with small explosive perforating charges under cold conditions, sealed with adsorbent (vermiculite) in cardboard boxes and incinerated. The clean ordnance items were recovered from the ash discharge system and sold to a foundry for melting into recyclable metal.

Ammonia has a very strong scent and can bum the inside of your nose, thus damaging the mucus membrane. Be careful when using this material. Ever notice the sharp smell from a cat litter box that makes your eyes tear That comes from dilute concentrations of ammonia that are present in urine.

The fuel bundle arranged on a 12x12 lattice with an active length of 1,9m is contained in a duct (or box). The cruciform control rods are placed in the gaps between the square ducts. There are 3 enrichments in the initial loading 1.8%, 2.4% and 3.0% as uranium dioxide. The discharge bum up is about 30000 MWd/tU.
