Building Explosion

Process plants are categorized into different hazard classifications, according to the potential explosion energy available from vessel rupture, condensed-phase explosion, confined vapor (building) explosion, or VCE. [Pg.118]

Very generally, it is considered as quite uneconomical to construct and build explosion protected apparatus in such a way that all specific values mentioned above are met jointly at their lower limits. [Pg.99]

In a building explosion, get out of the building as quickly and calmly as possible. [Pg.35]

Because of the possibility of explosive gas formation and accumulation within some sections of the incinerator building, explosive gas monitoring shall be located near the fuel feed system, the combustion chambers, and in the area where organic liquids are stored prior to their incineration. To minimize the potential for explosive gas formation, an automatic purge system should be considered along with periodic checks for the buildup of combustible gas mixtures. [Pg.47]

Chemists are satisfied how atoms of the different elements could form from the initial enormous energy of the big bang explosion, without, however, the need to concern themselves with the reason for its origin. Atoms subsequently can combine into molecules, which in turn build increasingly complex systems and materials, including those of the living systems. This is the area of interest for chemists. [Pg.35]

Microscopists in every technical field use the microscope to characterize, compare, and identify a wide variety of substances, eg, protozoa, bacteria, vimses, and plant and animal tissue, as well as minerals, building materials, ceramics, metals, abrasives, pigments, foods, dmgs, explosives, fibers, hairs, and even single atoms. In addition, microscopists help to solve production and process problems, control quaUty, and handle trouble-shooting problems and customer complaints. Microscopists also do basic research in instmmentation, new techniques, specimen preparation, and appHcations of microscopy. The areas of appHcation include forensic trace evidence, contamination analysis, art conservation and authentication, and asbestos control, among others. [Pg.328]

Another safety issue to be considered which might be exacerbated in the reprocessing option is that the plutonium generated in power reactors, called reactor-grade plutonium because it is made up of a variety of plutonium isotopes, contains plutonium-241, which is subject to spontaneous fission (8). The mixture of isotopes makes it extremely difficult to build an effective nuclear weapon. However, an explosive device could be built using this mixture if control of detonation is sacrificed (48). [Pg.242]

The equipment in which the dust is handled or stored should be designed to contain the pressure resulting from an internal explosion. Most dusts show maximum pressures of ca 345—700 kPa (50—100 psi) however, the rate of pressure rise changes from ca 700 to 70,000 kPa/s (100—10,000 psi/s). Equipment-containment design can be coupled with explosive-venting design for the equipment and the building. [Pg.442]

Proper ventilation and housekeeping minimizes secondary explosions. Dust coUectors of the dry type should be located outside the building, and provided with conduction bags and adequate explosion venting to a safe location. [Pg.442]

The nature of the initiation step, which may occur in a variety of ways, is not known in all cases. Commonly used ethers such as ethyl ether, isopropyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, and i)-dioxane are particulady prone to form explosive peroxides on prolonged storage and exposure to air and light (see Peroxides AND PEROXY COMPOUNDS, ORGANIC), and should contain antioxidants (qv) to prevent their build-up. One of the exceptions to the peroxide forming tendency of ethers is methyl fert-alkyl ethers such as methyl fert-butyl ether [1634-04-4] (MTBE) and fert-amyl methyl ether [994-05-8] (TAME). Both have shown htde tendency if any to form peroxides (2,8). [Pg.425]
