Finally, an interesting trend in supply-chain management is improving business practices by providing capabilities to improve service for customers. One such concept is capability to promise. The idea is not just to ensure that the product is available, but that the supply chain is capable of delivering the product. This involves, for instance, capability to rapidly change the schedule to accommodate the customer order and interact with the active plant schedule. Such a system was developed at Celanese Fibers, which is integrated with a Customer Order System and enabled via a Web browser. 

For our second example, we will copy an op-amp subcircuit model from the Maxim Integrated Products web site. This example will be the same for any device that uses a. subckt model. Thus, you can use this same procedure for IGBT subcircuits, MOSFET subcircuits, and Darlington subcircuits. Run your web browser and open site www.maxim-ic.com ... 

Since we follow an analytical, quantitative, and open-source computational approach, our pharmaceutical product/process and project management method and software toolset are implemented as (Internet browser readable) MS-Excel spreadsheets, integrated with several hyperlinks to the rule base and to optional 2D video and 3D virtual-reality objects for visualization. 

MDL s Chemscape Server and Chime Pro product suite is an integrated set of tools for chemical structure illustration, communication, and database searching. Chime and Chime Pro are chemical structure visualization programs that run in the most popular Web browsers. 

Control of the HPLC pump, the autosampler, and the MS is ensured by Masslynx 3.5 software. After optimization of the measurement conditions, a list of process measurements is setup (sample list), and the desired HPLC and MS steps are called upon. After a measurement, the ESI source is automatically brought to room temperature (shut down). Using 96-microtiter plates, 576 samples can be processed per measurement. The chromatograms are integrated by the software packages Quanlynx and Openlynx and exported as an Excel table. A macro is used to calculate the absolute intensities and therefore the ee and the conversion. The E values in kinetic resolution are automatically calculated with the formula of Sih [12]. Data processing is done with the Openlynx Browser. The overall process occurs continuously and enables analysis of up to 10000 samples per day, provided that the 8-channel multiplexed sprayer system is used [20b]. It is also possible to use 384-well micro titer plates. Systematic optimization is required for each new compound. 

There are a lot of secnrity tools and technology available and offered as part of browser software, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and ISPs. There are also tools available that help comply with other reqnirements snch as anthenticity, data integrity, accnracy of data transfer, and nomepudiation. This is also recognized by the FDA ... 

To provide more detail to the end user beyond a purity number and a color code, the UV chromatogram and the background-subtracted spectra that correspond to the integrated peaks are written into a format that can be read by a custom browser that resides within the corporate analytical request-and-tracking system. In this way, the end user can view via the intranet the associated LC-MS data by simply clicking on the numeric value for SI, which is reported via the Web page with the other associated profiling data. There is no requirement to have any vendor software on their personal computer (PC). 

Microsoft Office allows the option to record macros for performing repetitive tasks. Although macros are somewhat limited for the development of true VBA applications, macro recording can be used effectively to learn VBA or create templates of code that can be generalized with the addition of variables. If VBA for Microsoft Office is enabled, you only need to press alt-fi i to open the VBA Integrated Development Environment (IDE). A search of the on-line help for Application Object will provide an interactive object hierarchy that describes (with detailed code examples) each object or collection. There are literally thousands of objects within the Microsoft Office application object models. Another very useful tool within the VBA environment is the Object Browser, which can be invoked with the F2 key. The Object Browser can be particularly useful to learn the objects of external components that have been referenced from within VB or VBA. This method is an excellent way to get started with new object types and follow along with the documentation. An example is shown in Figure 18.3 from the Excel 2000 VBA IDE. NEXPERT OBJEXT represented domain specihc knowledge explicitly as networks of rules and class-object hierarchies. The rule-based and object-based representations are tightly integrated in a common design environment and are supported by visual editors and graphical browsers. 

All real-time and historical information is stored on or available from the enterprise server. This can integrate information from multiple distributed applications and databases and consolidate the data into a single history system. This can then be made available as standard reports via networked printers or standard displays using Web browsers across the corporate Intranet. Copies of batch reports are written to local optical disks and also copied to the site Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) as a secondary backup and for long-term storage. 

The use of Web browsers and Intranet facilities looks set to become very popular in the next generation of computer systems. Many suppliers of corporate computer systems are already building such facilities into their current products. Issues concerning security and data integrity, however, do exist. Although any problems will undoubtedly be overcome, it may take a few years before this technology is mature enough for exploitation in the pharmaceutical industry.
