Florfenicol (2) has been approved in Japan for the treatment of pseudo-tuberculosis caused by Pasteurellapiscicida and streptococcosis m. yeUowtail fish. The recommended dose is 10 mg/kg for up to one week and the drug withdrawal time is five days after cessation of treatment. Florfenicol is active in bovine respiratory disease caused by Pasteurella species and mastitis caused by Staphylococci and Streptococci. It is also effective in neonatal cohbacillosis caused by E. coli. The drug is being developed worldwide by Schering-Plough Animal Health for the treatment of aquatic and bovine diseases. 

In agreement with abundant mRNA in mammary gland, high levels of apelin are present in bovine colostrum oral intake of apelin might modulate immune responses in neonates [4]. 

Foetal and neonatal livers contain exceptionally high levels of copper compared to the adult organ. Thus, the livers of new-born rats contain as much as 20 times the level of copper and zinc metallothionein as that found in 70-day-old rats.1150 Again, a metallothionein from foetal bovine liver contained eight copper and two zinc atoms per molecule of protein.1151 These proteins can only be isolated with difficulty under oxygen-free conditions. It appears then that large amounts of copper (and zinc) are stored in the liver bound to metallothionein, and are mobilized as required for enzyme synthesis after birth. 

Four y-pyrones oxopodopyrone 9 (39), oxopodopyrone-8-methyl-9 (40), oxopodopyrone 10 (41), oxopodopyrone-8-methyl-lO (42), were isolated from the methanol extract of leaves of Gonsystylus keithii (Thymeliaceae). These compounds markedly inhibited the bovine parathjo oid hormone (PTH)-induced Ca release from neonatal mouse calvaria in vitro. The inhibitory activities of 39 to 42 were tested at the concentration of O.Olpg/ml, 0.1 lg/ml, l.Ojxg/ml and lO.Opg/ml each, the inhibitory activities of these compounds were assumed to be the same and were found to be more potent than those of calcitonins, etidronate and ipriflavone [37]. 

Primary rat cortical cells were prepared from neonatal Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats within 3 days of birth (Primary Cell Co., Ltd.). The dissociated cells contained neurons, glial cells, and fibroblasts. These cells were suspended in the culture medium at 1 X 10 cells/ml solution. The materials that were to be tested as cryoprotectants were then added to the medium. The culture medium consisted of Dulbecco s modified Eagle s medium (DMEM) and 10 vol% fetal bovine serum (FBS). Control dissociated neurons that had not been treated with the cryopreservation were cultured so that they could be compared with the cryopreserved neurons.

Upon neonatal treatment of mice with diethylstilbestrol, the delayed-type hypersensitivity response to oxazolone was similar in controls and diethylstilbestrol-treated animals at eight weeks, increased in treated females and males at six months, but reduced in treated females at one year (Forsberg, 2000). In the same study, the levels of serum IgG and IgM antibodies to cardiolipin showed age-dependent fluctuations but were similar in controls and diethylstilbestrol-treated females however, the IgG antibodies in diethylstilbestrol-treated females were qualitatively different from those in controls with respect to sensitivity to bovine serum (a source of p2-glycoprotein I), although these antibodies are not associated with autoimmune disease. In contrast to the situation with females, diethylstilbestrol-treated males had higher levels of these antibodies than controls (Forsberg, 2000). 

Type 1 fimbriae have a well established role in UTI [98], and have also been implicated in neonatal meningitis [99], Crohn s disease [100, 101], and bovine mastitis [102-106], Their involvement in UTI pathogenesis has been extensively studied. UTIs are believed to affect at least 50% of women in the western world over their lifetime. Each year, 150 million UTIs have been estimated to occur worldwide.
