Boswellia serrata

Boswellia serrata j-Camphorene (Compound 4) and p-Camphorene (Compound 5) and Cembrenol (Serratol)... [Pg.392]

A perceptible marker of the olibanum fragrances coming from Somalia, Sudan, or Ethiopia is the aliphatic octyl acetate marked by a distinct acrid smell. Boswellia carterii contains up to 50% of the aliphatic octyl acetate, demonstrated by the strong stinging smell of the fume, whereas Boswellia serrata (its common name in India is salai guggul) contains none or only small amounts of it and, consequentiy, does not have such a harsh smell. [Pg.393]

Another striking difference relates to the diterpenes (Figure 16.3) B. carterii reveals strong peaks that have been assigned to verticilla-4 (20),7,ll-triene (compound 1), incensole acetate (compound 2), and incensole (compound 3) and, on the other hand, Boswellia serrata shows peaks of m- and / -camphorene (compoimd 4 and compound 5) as well of cembrenol (= serratol) (compound 6). [Pg.393]

Boswellia serrata olibanum has a chemical composition close to that of both the B. carteri and of B. sacra, but contains compounds that are absent in those from other Boswellia and could be used as markers methylchavicol (38), p-anisaldehyde (47), methyleugenol (70), isocaryophyllene (82), sesquiterpene 91, elemicin (92) and an unidentified diterpene (124) eluting between cembrene C (123) and verticilla-4(20),7,ll-triene (125). It is devoid of (5-caryophyllene (73), a-humulene (78), caryophyllene oxide (95) and bornyl acetate (50). [Pg.275]

Preparations from the gum resin of Boswellia serrata have been used as traditional remedies in Ayurvedic medicine in India for inflammatory diseases (1). The gum contains substances that have anti-inflammatory properties they are pentacyclic triterpenes related to boswellic acid, which inhibit leukotriene biosjmthesis in neutrophilic granulocytes by inhibiting 5-lipoxygenase. Certain boswellic acids also inhibit elastase in leukocytes, inhibit proliferation, induce apoptosis, and inhibit topoisome-rases in cancer cell lines. [Pg.1563]

In a double-blind, placebo-controUed study in 40 patients aged 18-75 years with bronchial asthma who were given Boswellia serrata 300 mg tds for 6 weeks, 28 had improved dyspnea, a reduced number of attacks, increases in FEVi, FVC, and peak flow, and reduced eosinophil counts and ESR (2). Of 40 patients, aged 14-58 years, given lactose 300 mg tds for 6 weeks, only 11 improved. [Pg.1563]

In patients with ulcerative cohtis, Boswellia serrata 350 mg tds for 6 weeks produced improvements in stool properties, histopathology of rectal biopsies, hemoglobin, serum iron, calcium, phosphorus, proteins, and total leukocyte and eosinophil counts, with remission in 82% of patients (3). The corresponding figure with sulfasalazine 1 g tds was 75%. [Pg.1563]

In 30 patients aged 18 8 years with chronic colitis, characterized by vague lower abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, diarrhea, and palpable tender descending and sigmoid colons, Boswellia serrata (900 mg/day for 6 weeks) produced remission in 14 of 20 patients, and sulfasalazine (3 g/day for 6 weeks) in 4 of 10 patients (4). There were few adverse effects. [Pg.1563]
