In the first eight chapters devoted to carbides, several basic principles are reviewed such as atomic and molecular structure, crystalline arrangement, type of bond, etc. These principles also qiply to nitrides but are not repeated and only cross-referenced. Whenever possible, the relationship between structure, properties, and applications is stressed throughout the book.

When chemical reactions are carried out in inclusion complexes, reactions can proceed selectively due to template control effects caused by the host compound. In some cases, reaction occurs only in the inclusion complex, but not in solution, since molecules can be arranged in the appropriate positions for reaction in an inclusion crystal. When an optically active host compound is used, enantiose-lective reactions can be accomplished. For some time we have been studying such selective reactions in inclusion complex crystals in the solid state. However, these reactions have already been published in the book Organic Solid State Reactions [1], In this present chapter, some representative topics and some recent new results of selective thermochemical and photochemical reactions in inclusion crystals are briefly summarized. 

This book, Organic Photochromic and Thermochromic Compounds, is the fourth major treatise on photochromism involving organic molecules and derived systems. The first such book was edited by G. H. Brown in the Weissberger series in 19711, the second was edited by H. Durr and H. Bouas-Laurent in the Elsevier series in 19902.

Part V includes two papers on protein (see Chap. 23) and DNA preparation (see Chap. 24). These papers are relevant to the subject of biosensor technologies but did not fit elsewhere into the book organization outline.

Hall, Nina. The New Chemistry. Cambridge Cambridge University Press, 2000. This is an extremely useful and accessible book organized in seventeen chapters and reviewing research during the final three decades of the 20th century. 

The Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) is a directorate of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The CCPS, which is sponsored by approximately 80 companies in the process industries, was established in 1985 in response to a number of catastrophic incidents that had occurred prior to that time. The CCPS aims to improve process safety by publishing books, organizing conferences, conducting classes, and sponsoring research. The CCPS is probably best known through its very extensive list of books to do with process safety and the journal Process Safety Progress.
