Machine screws (or bolts) require special tools. The combination wrench is one type of hand tool used with machine screws. The adjustable wrench is more versatile, allowing the technician to use it with different sizes of machine screws (see Figure 8-20). We may also use pliers, second-class levers, during the combining process. Pliers can be found in various types (see Figure 8-21). Slip joint pliers allow material to be held firmly. A spotface cutter. Fig. 8.15, is used to provide a flat and square seating for a screw, bolt or nut on the surface of the workpiece, usually on the surface of a rough casting which would not otherwise provide a sufficiently accurate seating. The spotface is similar to a counterbore cutter, but has teeth on the end only. It will cut to only a very limited depth and caimot be used to counterbore. Counterbore cutters, on the other hand, can be used to spotface. [Pg.127]

Designed for milling tee slots in machine tables, this cutter has teeth on its circumference and on both sides. To reduce chatter and provide maximum chip clearance, the teeth are alternately right-hand and left-hand helix, and each alternate side tooth is removed. To produce a tee slot, the groove is first cut using a side-and-face cutter, end mill or slot drill and finally the wide slot at the bottom is cut using a tee-slot cutter. Fig. 11.8(k). Other problems encountered by some have included seized bolts and the problem that lubricants used to unseize the bolts must be used in a manner that does not interfere with CW agent monitoring equipment. To begin, cut a board the length of a radius of the circle you wish to cut, plus extra for a handle. Mark a line across the board for the saw slot (1) and bore it out (2) (be careful of saw kick-back as you do this). Clamp the edger to the sawbar, insert the bar through the slot and bolt the unit to the board (3). Measure from the inside edge of a chain cutter and mark the desired radius in the center of the board (4).
