Dominant hand

Race the index and third lingers ot your dominant hand just below the wrist bone on the thumb side ot your nondominant arm. 

Everyone has preferred behaviours. All things being equal, we tend to do the things that we are most comfortable with doing and avoid doing the things that come less naturally to us. The elbow test involves applying products to the inside of the elbow up to six times per day for three weeks. This is a sensitive area of skin, and easily defined, which is important since this is a selfapplication test. This test is useful for products such as body lotions, etc., and also as a preliminary to a face test, where the skin is more sensitive. Each panellist serves as their own control the test material is applied to one elbow and the control material applied to the other. The panel is balanced according to sex, hand dominance, and initial skin grades of reaction. One half of the panel has the dominant hand allocated to the test material, and the other half has their dominant hand allocated to the control material. The levels of irritation elicited by the test and control treatments are compared. Subjective comments are also taken into consideration. At intervals throughout the treatment period, each site is assessed for visible signs of irritation, for example, erythema and dryness. 

Finally, signs that do not reference time directly can also make use of the future is ahead metaphor (Taub, in press). For example, the dominant hand in the sign look-back-on ( reminisce ) moves from near the eyes, around the head, and behind the signer, look-forward-to is made with the same handshape but with movement upward and away from the signer. For both the signs continue and predict, the hands move forward, ahead the signer. 

These examples illustrate how the form of certain signs reflects a mapping between spatial structure and temporal structure. The mapping is based on the spatial metaphor in which future time is mapped to space ahead of a reference point, and the past is mapped to space behind this point. The temporal reference point can be represented either by the signer s body or by the non-dominant hand. 

Prenatal exposure to cocaine can alter the typical developmental trajectory of functional asymmetries. Twenty infants who were prenatally exposed to cocaine performed a grasping task with their right hand for significantly shorter durations and were less likely to show a dominant hand preference at 1 month of age (329). It is unclear from this study whether the absence of side biases in motor functions seen in cocaine-exposed, 1-month-old infants continues beyond the neonatal period. Considering how much plasticity there is in infants brains, any early nervous system disorganization or damage may not predict later outcomes. Therefore, the possibility that absence of motor asymmetries seen in these infants may reflect a transient effect of prenatal exposure to cocaine must be considered.

The ancient Greeks, Romans and Arabs all regulated food and drugs. Principally, their concern was with product purity, one of the three pivotal concepts that still form the basis for drug approval today. The typical penalty in ancient times for violating the standards was the loss of the dominant hand that had made the adulterated product. The nurse should wear nonsterile gloves on both hands, not just on the dominant hand. Thirty minutes will allow absorption of the medication. 

Participants are required to place pegs into holes first with their dominant hand and then with their nondominant hand. The amount of time it takes to piace aii the pegs is the dependent measure.

Grasp the smaller (atropine) autoinjector with the thumb and first two fingers of your dominant hand (like holding a pen or pencil) (Figure S3.3b).

The effect of pretreatment with ketorolac on pain during injection of propofol and propofol premixed with lidocaine has been studied in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 90 ASA I-II patients aged 18-75 years, scheduled for elective plastic surgery and who had no contraindications to propofol or NSAIDs [3Tj. All had a 20-gauge intravenous cannula inserted on the dorsum of the non-dominant hand and were given an infusion of propofol 5 ml/kg/minute after injection of the study... 

Look for functional distribution of the lesions for example, the first three fingers of the dominant hand are commonly involved in occupational disease. 

Pompholyx or dyshidrotic-like eczema due to rubber allergies is found in bank employees and other workers with frequent exposure to rubber bands. The dermatitis principally affects the dorsolateral aspects of the digits of the dominant hand. The chief sensitizers are thiurams and thiazoles (Conde-Salazar 1990b). 

Black rubber can sensitize hydraulic engineers. Assembly workers build the frame and both rivet and seal. Set-up men, riveters, retouching specialists, and engine fitter-mechanics may come into contact with sealants that may contain phenol-formaldehyde resin (Beck 1989), epoxy base (Handley and Burrows 1994), hexavalent chromate in hardeners for epoxy-based sealants (Handley and Burrows 1994) and polysulfides in two-part sealant bases (Wilkinson and Beck 1993 Bruze et al. 1996). Thiocol, a synthetic rubber based on polysulfide polymers, is used by aircraft fitters to dip screws and rivets into before use, and a fingertip dermatitis localized to the thumb and first two fingers of the dominant hand was seen in five of six fitters with positive patch-test reactions to the polysulfide-polymer-containing system (Wilkinson and Beck 1993). 

The use of mechanical cutting instruments, such as scissors and hair trimmers, not infrequently causes the appearance of well-delimited hyperkeratotic lesions in areas of friction, such as the inner lateral aspects of the first, second and even third fingers (handling of scissors) of the dominant hand. These lesions tend to be disregarded by physicians and patients alike and are discovered only when the patients hands are examined in detail, since they do not tend to impair dexterity at work. They can be compared to other professional stigmata (fiddlers callosities, etc.). 

Procedure. Most hairdressers prefer to shampoo first. Cutting is done with the dominant hand. The serving hand guides the comb or presents a row of hair to the scissors by squeezing hair between the second and third finger of the serving hand.

The 0 position should be avoided. The preferred position to speak with a person or make initial contact is the 1 position. Because teachers are usually unarmed, the 1 position away from the person s dominant hand is preferred. Therefore, if an unarmed person is making initial contact with an unfamiliar person, one that has a potential to be violent or appears upset, an attempt to determine the dominant hand is quite a challenge. Standing in the 1 position away from a person s dominant hand means that usually in order to throw a punch, the violent person has to reposition or cross his body, shortening the reach of his or her punch, slowing the action, and allowing the teacher or staff person to avoid the assault and use a barrier. When a second school person or official enters the situation, he should try to position himself in either the opposite 1 position or one of the 2 /2 positions (Siddle, 2001). 

Stacy is currently the principal s administrative assistant and has held this position for over fifteen years. Job tasks include filing, typing, and answering phone calls. She comes to work one day with a splint on her right dominant hand because of pain in her wrist. She states that her hand has been falling asleep and that the sensation wakes her up at night. She has not received medical treatment for her condition.
