Birth control pill estrogens

Women prescribed ampicillin, bacampicillin, and penicillin V who take birth control pills containing estrogen should use additional contraception measures. [Pg.73]

Antibiotic revolution has provided long and healthy life to people. The life expectancy has almost doubled. The increased population has caused many social problems in terms of food resources, environmental issues, employment, etc. To control these problems, population is required to be controlled. This has lead to the concept of family planning. Antifertility drugs are of use in this direction. Birth control pills essentially contain a mixture of S)mthetic estrogen and progesterone derivatives. Both of these compounds are hormones. It is known that progesterone suppresses ovulation. Synthetic progesterone derivatives are more potent than... [Pg.171]

Depending upon the circumstance and desired effects, endocrine-disrupting chemicals can be either good or bad. The endocrine system is a finely balanced system responsible for fertility and many of the feminine and masculine traits we are all familiar with. Endocrine disruptors are used by millions of women in the form of the pill to control fertility. Chemicals in birth control pills subtly manipulate the endocrine system to reduce fertility. Unfortunately, we now know that many chemicals are capable of influencing the endocrine systems. When these chemicals, such as DDT and TCDD, are released into the environment, they reduce the fertility of wildlife. Exposure to endocrine disruptors is linked to decreased fertility in shellfish, fish, birds, and mammals. Endocrine disruptors such as nonylphenol have been shown to feminize male fish, interfering with reproduction. Some studies have also linked exposure to endocrine disruptors to decreases in human male sperm count. Ironically, urinary metabolites of the birth control pill as well as the female hormone estrogen pass through waste treatment plants and are released into the aquatic environment, where even small concentrations cause feminization of male fish. [Pg.221]

The female hormone (estrogen) can fuel the growth of breast cancer cells, and pregnancy should be avoided for breast cancer patients. Tamoxifen (7, Nolvadex ) was initially developed by Imperial Chemicals Industries (ICl) as a birth-control pill. Although... [Pg.32]

Barbiturates may counteract the effects of birth control pills that contain estrogen. A woman taking those oral contraceptives may become pregnant after taking barbiturates. [Pg.65]

Probably the most widely used hormone preparations in the world are those used in healthy women who are not suffering from a disease. These are, of course, birth control pills, which usually contain derivatives of estrogen and progesterone. While they can be used in certain gynecologic disorders with efficacy, the vast majority of prescriptions are written to prevent pregnancy. Their development introduced a new era in society a virtually 100 percent effectiveness, replacing IUDs (intrauterine devices), condoms, creams, jellies, and diaphragms. [Pg.159]

In addition to the many hundreds of steroids isolated from plants and animals, thousands more have been synthesized in pharmaceutical laboratories in a search for new drugs. Among the best-known synthetic steroids are the oral contraceptives and anabolic agents. Most birth-control pills are a mixture of two compounds, a synthetic estrogen, such as ethynylestradiol, and a synthetic progestin, such as norethindrone. Anabolic steroids, such as stanozolol and methandrostenolone (Dianabol), are synthetic androgens that mimic the tissue-building effects of natural testosterone. [Pg.1135]

Birth control pill that contains synthetic forms of both female sex hormones progesterone and estrogen. [Pg.354]

The most common form of the birth control pill is the combination pill, which consists of synthetic forms of two female sex hormones progesterone and estrogen. In some forms of the ccjmbination pill (multiphasic) the amount of synthetic progesterone or estrogen varies depending on where the w oman is in the menstrual cycle. The combination birth control pill works by suppressing ovulation (release of a... [Pg.354]

The combination birth control pill contains synthetic versions of the two female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. [Pg.372]

Oral contraceptives Birth control pills contain varying amounts of estrogens and proges-terones. In excessive amounts these may cause stomach upset, and in females (even prepubertal) may cause transient vaginal spotting. Some formulations may contain iron. [Pg.288]
