Yi Mu Cao specifically treats stagnation of blood in the Lower-Jiao and is often used as deputy to treat gynecological disorders, such as dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea and irregular menstruation. It is used frequently to clear heat and remove congealed blood from the Lower-Jiao, thus it is often used in acute and chronic infections and inflammations in that region, such as cervicitis and adnexitis.

The clinical value of pregnanediol determination is found in gynecological disorders, in cases of abnormal pregnancies, and as evidence of actively secreting corpus luteum and ovulation during the normal menstrual cycle. 

Probably the most widely used hormone preparations in the world are those used in healthy women who are not suffering from a disease. These are, of course, birth control pills, which usually contain derivatives of estrogen and progesterone. While they can be used in certain gynecologic disorders with efficacy, the vast majority of prescriptions are written to prevent pregnancy. Their development introduced a new era in society a virtually 100 percent effectiveness, replacing IUDs (intrauterine devices), condoms, creams, jellies, and diaphragms.

Sonography plays a pivotal role as the primary imaging modality in gynecologic disorders causing pelvic pain. CT and MRl allow complementary assessment of the pelvis and abdomen including the gastrointestinal and urologic system. 

In this chapter, common gynecological and non-gynecological causes of acute and chronic pelvic pain will he covered. Their relative frequency of imaging hy MRl or CT is listed in Table 17.1.
