When realistic quantities of the natural prostaglandins became available, their extreme potency and wide-ranging biological activities were discovered and visions of therapeutic application in the regulation of fertility, control of ulcers, blood pressure, bronchial asthma, and many other conditions led to a torrent of chemical and biological studies which currently measures about four papers daily, and at least one a week dealing with synthesis alone. [Pg.1]

There are numerous choices of contraception for women, and the efficacy and costs of each must be balanced when giving advice, both to the individual and to the community at large. Hormonal contraception is still the most effective method of fertility control, and in this section only hormonal contraception will be considered. However the relative merits of other methods such as intrauterine contraceptive devices (lUCDs), condoms, and vaginal or cervical caps should be kept in mind as alternatives. Condoms in particular have important advantages in limiting spread of sexually transmitted disease. [Pg.770]

Due to the liquid state of the silicone prepolymer, silicone polymers are prepared as preformed sheets and tubing or any other shape by first mixing the drug with the silicone polymer and a catalyst (e.g., stannous octoate). Then, the mixture is cast as a sheet or in a mold followed by curing overnight. For example, Norplant is a set of flexible, closed cylindrical capsules (2.4 x 34 mm) of Silastic silicone polymer containing levonorgestrel for fertility control for 5 years. The capsules are inserted under the skin of the upper arm. [Pg.480]

Fig. 18 (Upper panel) The 4—week serum levonorgestrel profiles in 12 human volunteers, each receiving 1 or 2 units of a transdermal contraceptive system (10 cm, with daily dosage of 28.3 pg/day) once a week, consecutively for 3 weeks, and the same size of placebo on week 4. (Lower panel) Comparative serum concentration profiles of progesterone during the pretreatment and treatment cycles in two subjects, each as the representative for group A (receiving lOcm ) and group B (receiving 20 cm ), respectively. The suppression of progesterone peak during the treatment cycle is an indication of effective fertility control.
