Binder functionality

Symecko CW, Rhodes CT. Binder functionality in tablctted systems. Drug Dev Ind Pharm 1995 21 1091-114. [Pg.335]

These authors studied the steric stabilisation of aqueous BaTiOs suspensions with block copolymers, which fulfil both the stabilising and binder function. Some block copolymers with PVA and polyacrylic acid blocks were found to be very suitable for this purpose. They found further that depletion flocculation occurs with random copolymers. In that case the homogeneity of dried layers prepared was lower. [Pg.203]

It was shown that the monoacrylate derivative exists as a mixture of two isomers — aminoester (1 and aminoalcohol (II). The products obtained are efficient adhesion promoters for glass-reinforce plastics based on various binders (polyester, polyepoxide, polyacrylate) since they contain three type of functional groups — amino, methacrylate and alcohol — that allow them to enter into reactior with binder functional groups. [Pg.541]

High Carbon Yield. Furfuryl alcohol and furfural are reactive solvents (monomers) and are effective in producing high carbon yield (heat induced carbonization in a reducing atmosphere). They function as binders for refractory materials or carbon bodies. Furfuryl alcohol usually requires acidic catalysis and furfural basic catalysis. Mixtures of furfuryl alcohol and furfural are generally catalyzed with acid although some systems may be catalyzed with base. [Pg.81]

The lambda type is nongelling, and functions as a thickner. Iota-carrageenan has been recommended (45) for use in formulating low fat ground beef due to its abihty to retain moisture, especially through a freeze—thaw cycle which is typical for ground beef patties. Oat bran and oat fiber can also be used to improve moisture retention and mouth feel. Modified starches can be used as binders to maintain juiciness and tenderness in low fat meat products. Maltodextrins (dextrose equivalent less than 20) may be used as binders up to 3.5% in finished meat products. Other carbohydrates such as konjac flour, alginate, microcrystalline cellulose, methylceUulose, and carboxymethylceUulose have also been used in low fat meat products (see CELLULOSE ETHERs). [Pg.34]

The purity of oxygen from chlorate candles before and after gas filtration is indicated in Table 2. A particulate filter is always used. Filter chemicals are HopcaUte, which oxidizes CO to CO2 molecular sieves (qv), which remove chlorine compounds and basic materials, eg, soda lime, which removes CO2 and chlorine compounds. Other than H2O and N2, impurity levels of <1 ppm can be attained. Moisture can be reduced by using a desiccant (see Desiccants). Gas purity is a function of candle packaging as well as composition. A hotter burning unit, eg, one in which steel wool is the binder, generates more impurities. [Pg.485]

Whereas semigloss paints can use only one extender, dat paints, especially interior, can use combinations of three or more. Gloss paints typically do not use extenders, which decrease gloss. As a result, gloss paints lack the hardening effect of extenders and must rely on harder binders for adequate durabihty. Other types of extenders used in paints can have functional properties such as corrosion resistance, mildew resistance, and film-hardening effects. Thek functional properties result from thek reactive nature in the paint film. Zinc oxide is an example of a functional extender that contributes to these properties in a paint film. [Pg.541]

Pyrotechnic mixtures may also contain additional components that are added to modify the bum rate, enhance the pyrotechnic effect, or serve as a binder to maintain the homogeneity of the blended mixture and provide mechanical strength when the composition is pressed or consoHdated into a tube or other container. These additional components may also function as oxidizers or fuels in the composition, and it can be anticipated that the heat output, bum rate, and ignition sensitivity may all be affected by the addition of another component to a pyrotechnic composition. An example of an additional component is the use of a catalyst, such as iron oxide, to enhance the decomposition rate of ammonium perchlorate. Diatomaceous earth or coarse sawdust may be used to slow up the bum rate of a composition, or magnesium carbonate (an acid neutralizer) may be added to help stabilize mixtures that contain an acid-sensitive component such as potassium chlorate. Binders include such materials as dextrin (partially hydrolyzed starch), various gums, and assorted polymers such as poly(vinyl alcohol), epoxies, and polyesters. Polybutadiene mbber binders are widely used as fuels and binders in the soHd propellant industry. The production of colored flames is enhanced by the presence of chlorine atoms in the pyrotechnic flame, so chlorine donors such as poly(vinyl chloride) or chlorinated mbber are often added to color-producing compositions, where they also serve as fuels. [Pg.347]

Pharmaceutical Applications. Sucrose has a long history in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. It imparts body to symps and medicinal hquids and masks unpleasant tastes. Sucrose also functions as a diluent to control dmg concentrations in medicines, as an ingredient binder for tablets, and to impart chewiness to the latter. Sustained-release medications and protective tablet glazes are prepared using sucrose (41). Sucrose-based sugar pastes are used to promote wound healing (58). [Pg.6]

The chelated organic titanates also function as adhesion promoters of the ink binder to printed substrates such as plastic films, paper, and aluminum foil (504). The acetylacetone complexes of titanium are the preferred products for promoting adhesion of printing inks to polypropylene films. [Pg.163]
