Figure 7.5 Histograms illustrating typical behavioral state changes observed following bilateral lesions of dopaminergic ventral tegmental pathways in rats receiving 6-hydroxydopamine into the nucleus accumbens (217). Notable amounts of REM sleep are evident during both the major wake (1900-0700) and major sleep (0700-1900) periods. Maintenance of the rest and activity periods to the 12 12 h light dark schedule, respectively, demonstrates the relative preservation of circadian processes. In addition to ALPE, mild acute renal failure, including dehydration, acute pyelonephritis, and renal pelvic tumors, is visualized as wedge-shaped contrast enhancement [15]. However, acute pyelonephritis and renal pelvic tumors are visualized as unilateral lesions, whereas ALPE is visualized as a bilateral lesion therefore, differentiation is possible. For a definitive diagnosis, the presence of patchy contrast enhancement must be demonstrated when the serum creatinine level is in the range from 1.2 to 3.5 mg/dl. However, as described above, a definitive diagnosis is not always necessary in clinical practice. [Pg.83]

Infarcts occurring as a consequence of cardiac arrest or severe hypotension (see Chap. 16) follow similar topographical patterns with bilateral lesions in the borderzones between the major cerebral arteries - a... [Pg.227]

With the early application of stereotaxic surgery to neurological studies in experimental animals, Anand and Brobeck (1951) first reported that bilateral lesions of small nuclei in the hypothalamus could disrupt feeding behavior with medial hypothalamic lesions causing obesity and lateral lesions aphagia. In the latter syndrome, the lesioned animals would completely stop eating to the extent that if not maintained... [Pg.243]

Fig. 4. Proposed stages of recovery from the profound regulatory impairments induced by lateral hypothalamic lesions, based on Teitelbaum and Epstein (1972). A similar profile of recovery is seen from the impairments induced by selective bilateral lesions of forebrain dopamine systems (see text). Fig. 4. A 67-year-old woman with a 5-year history of rheumatoid arthritis, who had taken prednisone and methotrexate, was given infliximab (55). Her rheumatoid arthritis improved, but she developed multiple bilateral lesions of molluscum contagiosum on the upper and lower eyelids, despite normal CD4 and CDS counts. She had had similar lesions during a previous course of infliximab. Excision biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. [Pg.1751]

Physical examination may be normal or show a blue or red mass behind the tympanic membrane. There is no significant lateralization to either ear. Bilateral lesions, either synchronous or asynchronous, have been described but are exceptional and should always arouse suspicion of Von-Hippel-Lindau disease (VHLD). Preliminary data indicate that at least 15% of all ELSTs are associated with VHLD and that the ELST is just another expanding list of lesions associated with this syndrome. ... [Pg.281]

A total of 44 women with an average age of 58 years were enrolled. Bilateral lesions were present in all patients. Bone metastases were present in 30 patients (63%). Liver-related symptoms were reported in all patients. The average dose of radiation administered was 2.1 GBq (56 mCi). All patients reported mild to moderate postembolization syndrome of nausea, vomiting, fever and mild upper quadrant pain, which was treated symptomatically. Only eight patients required hospitalization for more than 1 night for pain control or dehydration. Grade 3 toxicities of nausea and vomiting were present in seven patients. Two patients had documented stomach ulcers. No deaths attributable to the procedure occurred. [Pg.128]

This particular form, which has been termed localized, focal, nodular, or solitary OP, represents 5% to 20% of cases (6,18,19). It appears as a solitary nodule (<3 cm) or mass (>3 cm) (Fig. 2) with smooth, lobulated, or spiculated margins (6,75-77), often localized in the upper lobes (6). Bilateral lesions may occur in a minority of cases (78). Up to 62% of patients are asymptomatic, and the lesion is found incidentally at chest imaging (77-80). Underlying COPD has been reported in up to 67% of cases, and recurrent respiratory infections in 57%... [Pg.510]
