Best-worst scaling

In verbal self-report, subjects are asked to express their emotions verbally by means of open-ended questions, or to rate their emotions using Likert (or intensity) scales, CATA or best-worst-scaling (BWS). The application of BWS to conceptual profiling and the associated data analysis procedures are described in detail by Thomson et al. (2010) and by Thomson and Crocker (2014). For some applications, for example, human reliability analysis, a situation needs to be rated on a numerical scale. In these cases, values such as those shown in the left-hand column of Table 3.1 can be generated by comparing the situation being evaluated with the descriptions in the second, third, and subsequent columns which represent other PIFs relevant to the situation being assessed. These represent the worst, average, and best conditions that are likely to occur in chemical plants in general and correspond to ratings of 1,5, and 9 on the numerical scale in the left hand colunrm of Table 3.1. A numerical rating on a scale of 1 to 9 is made for each operaHon on each PIF. Normally the ends of the scale represent the best or worst PIF conditions. 

One of the worst aspects of being ill is the way the body develops a temperature . A healthy human should have a more-or-less constant body temperature of 37 °C (which, in the old-fashioned temperature scale of Fahrenheit, is 98.6 °F). A body temperature of above 100 °F is best avoided, and temperatures above about 104 °F are often lethal. As a temperature is so harmful to the body, why does the body itself generate the extra heat ... 

Closed system tests, using an unvented test cell (see Figure A2.5) or Dewar flask, can be used for vapour pressure systems. The runaway is initiated in the way that best simulates the worst case relief scenario at plant-scale. The closed system pressure and temperature are measured as a function of time. Most commercial calorimeters include a data analysis package which will present the data in terms of rate of temperature rise, dT/dt, versus reciprocal temperature (-1 / ), and pressure versus reciprocal temperature (see Figure A2.10). However, it is important to correct the temperature data for the effects of thermal inertia. See 2.7.2. 

However, although these aspects are discussed as separate topics below, in line with the way scientific studies and regulatory issues are normally defined, most consumers still see them as parts of a holistic picture where the good intentions of the people involved in the food supply chain are the most important assurance for all aspects of food quality. In this context, stringent safety measures and sophisticated process control, which are the cornerstone of food quality assurance schemes in conventional supply chains, maybe seen by consumers at best as self-imposed restrictions that prove the sincerity of these good intentions, and at worst as unfair, unnecessary burdens introduced through lobbying from big profit business to support its suppression of small-scale or local producers. 

Two different types of scales can be used (cf. Belton and Stewart 2002, pp. 121-122). A local scale is defined with the best and worst existing alternatives forming the reference points for the bounds of the scale while a global scale is defined relative to absolute values for best and worst performance. Local scales are easier to define but global scales allow the decision maker to define objective weights independent of observed attribute values. 

Hydrogen can be potentially produced from renewable sources, thus enabling the intermittent and excess power generated to be stored for applications in transport, homes, and businesses, thereby making off-grid wind and solar sources economic. However, it must be noted, that commercial applications of these concepts are fairly limited at best or nonexistent at worst, and many decades of research and development may be necessary to solve the technical hurdles for application in a large-scale fashion. 

Some calcium and other minerals are found naturally in any water that has percolated through the ground. So if the swimming pool is allowed to become too alkaline, it will grow cloudy, at best, with suspended particles of insoluble salts or encrusted with growths of scale at worst. This appearance of a solid in a liquid solution is called precipitation, just as rain is called precipitation, because of the propensity of the solids to come out of the solution just as rain comes out of the sky. 

Get a new subset of descriptors (x ) by replacing 50-75% of the subset with descriptors selected with a bias from the descriptor pool. The bias is based on the quality value. The best quality value is assigned a value of 0.75 and the worst is assigned a value of 0.25. The others are scaled in that range. The scaled quality value is compared to a random number on the interval [0,1]. If the scaled quality value is greater than the random number, it is accepted into the new subset. If the number of iterations is equal to 200, then quit. 

The method of summated ratings can be shown readily using the index of disease activity (IDA) for rheumatoid arthritis proposed by Mallya and Mace. Six aspects of the patient s condition are assessed (morning stiffness, pain, grip strength, articular index, haemoglobin and the one hour erythrocyte sedimentation rate) and points are assigned to the values of each of these on a scale of 1 (the best situation) to 4 (the worst possibility). 

Visual Analog Scales. The visual analog scale is a line, typically 10 to 20 cm in length, with the endpoints well defined (e.g., 0 = worst imaginable health state and 100 = best imaginable health state). The respondent is asked to mark the line where he or she would place a real or hypothetical health state in relation to the two end points. In addition, since death may not always be considered the worst possible health state, the subject s placement of death on the scale in relation to the other health states must be explicitly elicited.
